The championship deciding final race of the 2021 season had one of the most controversial moments in the history of F1, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen went onto each other after starting the race with equal points. Hamilton was the leader for most part of the race, but to the near end of the race, there were controversial steps taken by the race director which led Verstappen get close to Hamilton, and overtake him in the very last lap of the race, making him win not only the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but also his first ever World Championship.

Lewis seemed broken post race, afterall, being the first ever 8-time World Champion was right in front of his eyes. He was out of social media the following month after the race, and there were many events that followed, such as a thorough investigation of the entire race, and even Michael Masi was removed as the race director post the season. The Briton now recalls what he felt moments after finishing behind Verstappen and losing the championship. He stated that he just sat in the car, and although he knew he had to get out of the car and go to the podium, he simply couldn’t gather enough strength to do it.

Hamilton said that he was in disbelief and could not accept what just had happened; I had no strength. And it was one of the toughest moments, I would say, that I’ve had in a long, long time,” GPblog quoted him. 

Toto Wolff and the entire Mercedes crew kept fighting with the FIA for a very long period of time, Wolff even wanted the final lap to be reinstated, and the famous words, “no Michael no, that was so not right,” were spoken by him just as he saw his driver losing the championship. 

The efforts didn’t prove to be successful after no further decision was made by the FIA, and it was official, Verstappen was the World Champion.
