“I know both drivers quite well,” Frederic Vasseur comments on building rapport with the Ferrari drivers

Frederic Vasseur has stepped up as the Team Principal of one of the oldest and most successful teams in Formula 1 at a very crucial time. After more than a decade of the Scuderia not seeing the face of a World Championship win, the executives at Ferrari‘s Maranello headquarters are now impatient for results. At a moment like this, their former Chief Mattia Binotto walked away from his role since he failed to lead the team towards a tite victory despite being at the head for four years from 2019.

As soon as Frederic Vasseur settled into his new role as the Ferrari Team Principal, his work started and he got into rearranging whatever he felt was wrong with the Scuderia’s processes. Vasseur had his first press conference as Ferrari Chief recently, and there, he answer some questions regarding how he wants to go about leading his team from now on. And one of the questions that has piqued the fans’ interests is about Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainzs’ contracts with the Maranello outfit.

Leclerc and Sainz are both talented F1 racers who will no doubt be in demand if they wish to leave Ferrari for another team once their contract period gets over. As of now, they will remain bound to their deal with the Scuderia till 2024, but some think it would be prudent of Vasseur to renew both their contracts now so that the competitors do not get their hands on Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. But speaking at the press conference, Frederic Vasseur made it clear that contract renewal is not his priority right now. And then he said he has already built a rapport with them, so he does not worry about them going someplace else.

Frederic Vasseur says he already knows both Ferrari drivers “quite well”

Frederic Vasseur is new to the Ferrari office, so everyone is interested to know how he is holding up in the Scuderia environment. But his answers are hopeful as he said he has already built a rapport with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. He said, “I know both drivers quite well and I think we have some time before we have to talk about the future.”

Then, he commented on keeping contract talks reserved for a later time. He said, “For me it is not the first priority at the moment. We need to start the season very well, then there will be time for the rest. I think it would be wrong to start negotiations at a time when the priority is elsewhere.”

Frederic Vasseur has a lot of work to do before he gets Ferrari back to their winning ways once again. The Frenchman has now gotten a giant responsibility on his shoulder and it remains to be seen how he carries that out in the upcoming F1 2023 season.
