This weekend marked the 350th time that Fernando Alonso started a Grand Prix which in turn made him the most experienced driver in F1. He broke Kimi Raikkonen’s existing record of 349 race starts as he took on the challenges of the Marina Bay Circuit. Unfortunately, things did not go his way as he had a horrible experience at the track after encountering reliability issues yet again.
Fernando Alonso had managed to put his Alpine in the top 5 in qualifying putting him in the perfect place to start the Grand Prix. The Spaniard got a great start and managed to hold his position while Max Verstappen was on the charge behind him. Although Verstappen’s efforts were no match to Alonso’s defence. This is why fans and commentators were shocked to see Alonso retire from the race on lap 22 when his engine cut out.
This left Fernando Alonso fuming as he was on the sidelines after a great start to the race. A top 5 finish was there but it just didn’t happen. The Spaniard is known for criticising his team when they make mistakes and this situation was no different at all. Alonso gave his thoughts on the unlucky situation that ended his Grand Prix and what this meant in the long run.

He further went on to discuss his situation. “Once more, I think I was minus 50 points already this year with the mechanical issues. So we add another 10, so I’m minus 60. And if you add 60 points to my standings, I think we were in another league,” he said.
“So I’m very proud of the performance again this weekend. One of my best levels, but yet we cannot finish the races when we are in the points. Nothing we can do now, but disappointed.” He further went on to talk about the retirement and how it was so surprising. “No warning at all. Something happened, the noise was quite ugly. So I guess it’s something on the engine,” he concluded.
The Singapore GP was a disaster for Alpine as Esteban Ocon also managed to retire after encountering an engine issue resulting in the team leaving Singapore pointless. McLaren on the other hand managed to score a P4 and P5 finish pushing them ahead of Alpine in the constructors’ championship. Overall, it wasn’t a good day for Fernando Alonso and Alpine.
