‘I’m done with rookies,’ Guenther Steiner rules out new talent partnering Kevin Magnussen for 2023

Mick Schumacher and Guenther Steiner

After having Mick Schumacher aboard the team for 2 years, Guenther Steiner is keen on searching for the best prospect to partner Kevin Magnussen for 2023 as the German driver’s contract ends this year. Although retaining Mick doesn’t seem to be a viable option for the Haas team boss as he looks beyond his own team to hire some experienced talent that would make the team stronger next year.

Back in 2020, Haas announced that Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean would be leaving the team. Soon afterwards, Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher were announced to be joining the team next season. Doing so, Guenther had basically created an all-rookie lineup for 2021, which didn’t seem like a good idea back then and still doesn’t. After the team’s experience with two roomies, the team boss seems to have shifted his perspective.

It is clear that Guenther Steiner will now be focusing on experience more than raw talent and a clear example can be seen in bringing back Kevin Magnussen who has previously raced with the team for multiple years. Mick Schumacher doesn’t seem to have made the cut which has broadened the search for his replacement to partner K-Mag in 2023z Here is what Steiner had to say about the situation.

Here is what the Haas team boss told the media. “Still thinking, you know, we want to take our time to make sure that next year at no stage we think ‘we did this too quick’ – because we don’t need to be in a hurry now. There is not a lot out there anymore on open seats and drivers. There’s not a lot of options, so we just want to make sure that we take the right decision and have no regrets next year,” he said.

“I would say I’m done in the moment with rookies for the foreseeable future. But I mean, we need to see what is best for the team or who’s the best person or who is the best driver to bring the team forward,” he continued.

Having just one veteran on the team was a great decision for the team as they went from being last in the previous year’s championship to being 8th currently. With time, we will get to see if Mick Schumacher can help in keeping it that way. If Haas manages to finish 8th or higher, the possibility of Mick staying with the team strengthens. Otherwise, it doesn’t look good for the German driver.
