“It was not his wrongdoing,” Toto Wolff believes Lewis Hamilton’s podium was a breath of fresh air after a string of unfortunate results

Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton got on the podium in Canada after the very first race in Bahrain. It’s been a season of some average driving and some unfortunate results for the seven time world champion. There have been instances like the Spanish GP when he seemed to have given up and needed a lift from his team to keep going. It feels like the combined effort from the team and him is coming together to build something productive.
Canadian GP holds a special place in his heart as this was the venue where he won his first ever race in F1. With some help from the FIA to reduce Mercedes’ porpoising issues, Lewis Hamilton was able to find some lost form on one of his favorite circuits as he secured his 184th podium of his career. This must have tasted sweeter than the rest of them because of the position he has found himself this season.
Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton have found themselves in unchartered territory this season as Mercedes is used to challenging at the top for poles and race wins and not being uncertain of making into Q3. But it’s been that kind of season. After the massive overhaul in regulations, the German manufacturer has not been able to adapt as quickly and efficiently when we compare it to the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull.
Lewis Hamilton defended by Toto Wolff for what has been a difficult season for him so far

Toto Wolff still has stuck to his guns despite the results going against them. Mercedes’ team Principal defended Lewis Hamilton said, “There were races that worked against [Lewis] where he could’ve scored a podium or a better result & it was not his wrongdoing, but bad luck. Seeing him on the positive side & on the podium without anything in a way gifted, it’s good to see.”
“We’ve scored five podiums and we’ve seen glimpses of performance that we have but it’s far away from our own expectations on ourselves.”
“So I think you need to take a podium as a good result and especially on merit. I’m happy for Lewis because he was really disadvantaged in some of the races where the Safety Car, for example, went against him. So everybody’s in a good space but still, as I said before, lots of work to do,” as reported by racefans.
It’s been a season full of surprises and shocks and Lewis Hamilton’s form has been the biggest shocks of them all. It’s great to see him finding his feet yet again. It might be too late for him to fight for the championship but we would love to see him battle it out with Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
