The Mercedes Formula 1 team has been on the back foot since the dawn of the new sports regulations. It has been nothing short of a struggle for them, and with only six races remaining in the 2023 F1 season, the former 7-time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, has claimed that his team needs to burn the candle on both ends in the next six months to catch Red Bull next year.
The Milton-Keynes-based team has operated in a league of its own since 2022, and none of its rivals have been able to pose a stiff challenge in front of them. Max Verstappen has perfectly led the outfit’s charge, and it is no surprise that they secured the Constructors Championship in Japan with six races remaining on the calendar.
Lewis Hamilton is aware of the mighty task that Mercedes has in front of them, and while discussing his team’s prospects for 2024, he said, as reported by Silverarrows.net, “There are things that I’ve asked for that we’ve gone in part of the direction for next year. I think all the points that George [Russell] and I give have been fully listened to.“
He added, “I have no idea where the car is going to be next year, but we are a long, long way away. The next six months have got to be the greatest six months of development we’ve ever had to close that gap. To be really banging on the door. But the evidence is there at the McLaren. We’ve got to look at what they’ve done and go in that direction. That is the direction, but I truly believe my team can do it.”

Lewis Hamilton is desperate to secure a record-breaking eighth world title
While Lewis Hamilton has left no stone unturned in trying to urge his team to come up with the goods next year, the Brit has been stuck on seven world championships since 2020. He lost out on the 2021 title under shady circumstances, but since then, Mercedes hasn’t been able to provide him with potent machinery with which he could have a serious run at the title.
The 38-year-old recently signed a contract extension with the German team that runs until the end of the 2025 season, and considering this, he is desperate to have potent machinery underneath him at least once to challenge Max Verstappen and Co. Red Bull has nailed the new regulations from the get-go and thus, are reaping the benefits of it.
At the end of the ongoing campaign, it will be two years since introducing the new regulations, and it is a general belief that Mercedes has had quite a few learnings since 2022. Several pundits of the pinnacle of motor racing expect them to come out all guns blazing in 2024, but it’s not going to be easy keeping in view the level of competition in the sport.
