It came as a shock to most people when Lewis Hamilton and Angela Cullen announced that they would no longer be working together. Cullen had been a physiotherapist and confidate for the Briton since the 2016 Australian GP. In fact, they worked together almost exactly for seven years. The exact reasons have not been given, but there are hints, and it seems to be an amicable split, at least.

From their ‘farewell’ statements, it looks as if the physiotherapist left to “pursue her dreams”. From what Toto Wolff said in an interview following the Saudi Arabian GP, it seemed as if it was Hamilton’s decision to stop working with Cullen. But the two people involved have not disclosed why they parted ways, and are unlikely to ever do so. But according to the seven-time world champion, they remain very much in contact. That’s a good sign that it was amicable split.

In conversation with Sky Sports ahead of the Australian GP, Hamilton said: “Angela is living her life right now. She’s got so many ideas of things she wants to do. We message pretty much every day. We are still going to skydive together. We are always going to be in each other’s lives.” In an interview, he had said that Cullen “is in a different phase of her life”. He’s sang a similar tune here.

As mentioned above, Lewis Hamilton and Angela Cullen worked together for just around 7 years. She was a popular figure with his and Mercedes’ fans, and was often seen cheering for him in the garage. And despite this split, their friendship will endure, seemingly. Hamilton affirmed this with his words, saying that he’s “incredibly grateful” for Cullen.

The Briton said: “We’re stuck with each other, unfortunately, or fortunately! We’ve been through thick and thin. I am grateful our relationship is as good as it is. We’ve probably had one of the longest relationships I would say in the sport. I am incredibly grateful for her, I love her dearly. I think now I have got one of the guys, Stevo, who has been with me since my first race with McLaren, is helping me out as well.”

So while their working relationship might have ended, it seems the friendship is still there. That is good news for the Briton’s fans, who were obviously devastated when the news came through. While right now Hamilton’s going to be busy with the F1 season, it’s possible that he may hang out with Cullen again, at some point. If the split is amicable, then that’s likely to happen.
