Lewis Hamilton relives Italian GP humiliation by Tifosis, claims they ‘threw black cats’ at him
Lewis Hamilton has talked about the jeers that the fans have flung at him some years ago at the Italian GP.
Seven times World Champion Lewis Hamilton has conjured up quite a huge number of fans throughout his extensive career. On the other hand, his exploits in the sport has made sure that there are also people who do not necessarily like the Briton. Ahead of the Italian GP, Hamilton revealed that he had once faced immense hostility from the Tifosi at Monza.
At the peak of the Mercedes dominance during the Turbo Hybrid era, Hamilton had managed to win four races in Monza. It obviously did not sit well with the fans there because the Temple of Speed is the home race of Ferrari. Therefore, Lewis Hamilton isn’t really a popular figure at the Italian GP venue, with fans going to the lengths of throwing black cats at him to show their hatred towards the Mercedes driver.
Talking about the Tifosi at Monza ahead of the race, Hamilton said, “I can’t remember if it was here or somewhere else I got black cats thrown at me.” This year, however, Hamilton probably wouldn’t receive as much antagonism from the Tifosi because it is Max Verstappen who is public enemy number one for the Ferrari fans. The Dutchman would be looking to achieve a 10th consecutive victory and win the Italian GP, denying Ferrari their first possible win of the season.

Lewis Hamilton has had a poor history with Verstappen fans as well

Monza is not the only place where Hamilton has experience a hostile reception. Two years back, during the highly competitive 2021 season, Hamilton had been jeered at massively by Max Verstappen fans at various races including the Austrian GP and the Belgian GP.
Things had gotten even worse for Hamilton at Verstappen’s home race in Zandvoort for quite obvious reasons. Verstappen had controversially commented that it was not his job to ask the fans not to boo his opponent. However, Hamilton had taken all of it quite sportingly, claiming that the antagonism actually motivates him even more to put in better performances.
