Lewis Hamilton reveals why he wasn’t able to overtake Fernando Alonso for P2 at the Canadian GP.
Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton
The 2023 Canadian GP was filled with drama and excitement which also included a battle between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. After a dramatic and rain guzzled qualifying session, Alonso had gone on to qualify P3 whilst Lewis had qualified P4. After a string of grid penalties given to the grid, there was a massive shuffle. This led to the Ex McLaren teammates starting second and third respectively.
Whilst Max Verstappen led the race off the line, Fernando Alonso followed behind him but not for long. The Spaniard’s lead lasted for a few seconds before Lewis Hamilton passed him as he got a better start. However, Alonso was able to retake the position from Lewis before their first pit stop. It was an interesting battle between the two world champions during the whole race.
Fernando Alonso had a problem in the ending stages due to which he had to lift and coast. This in turn gave Lewis Hamilton an advantage which brought him closer to Alonso. However, it as no use as the Spaniard went on to defend his position and finish second with Lewis finishing behind him. The 7 time world champion admitted that he just didn’t have the pace to fight Alonso.
Lewis Hamilton struggling in low speed corners benefited Fernando Alonso
In an interview, here is what Lewis had to say about the battle. “Unfortunately we didn’t have the pace today. We knew this weekend wouldn’t be our strongest circuit as we struggle in the low speed corners particularly,” he said. “That’s really where I was losing to Fernando and to Max just on traction out of turn two and out of pretty much every corner,” the Mercedes driver continued.
In the end, Max Verstappen won the race after leading every lap. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton finished 4.7s behind Fernando Alonso. The Mercedes driver had gone on to complete the last 30 laps on Medium tyres. However, it does seem like Mercedes are back in form with their latest upgrades. With emphasis on them changing their side-pod design, it will mostly be a close battle between Mercedes and Aston Martin for P2 in the constructors.
