Lewis Hamilton unbothered about George Russell’s sector timing: ‘I only ever want to know the fastest’
Lewis and George
In the all-new F1 2022 season, we have already come quite a long way as the F1 paddocks have shifted to the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona for the sixth round of racing in this year–the Spanish Grand Prix. And as of now, Mercedes‘ position does not look too good compared to their performance in the previous seasons.
Mercedes AMG Patronas has been an undisputed Champion in the turbo-hybrid era of Formula 1 as their race pace was virtually unmatched in the grid. But in 2021, Red Bull came a long way to catch up with Mercedes in terms of their car’s performance, and then Max Verstappen made sure to clinch the Championship title with his sheer grit and talent.

But now that the FIA have made vast changes to all the rules of the sport, Mercedes is no longer one of the frontrunners on the grid, as they have been usurped from their position by Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull. And Lewis Hamilton, who has won seven World Championships till now, is currently struggling to get into the top 5 in the standings as his teammate George Russell has outscored him in four out of the five races that have happened till now.

Is Lewis Hamilton feeling threatened by newbie George Russell’s performance in the same Mercedes as him?
Lewis Hamilton has always been Mercedes’ number 1 driver when it comes to aiming for the Championships. The Stuttgart-based team has catered to all of his needs to make sure that he does not ever feel like moving to another team because they know Lewis has invaluable experience and talent when it comes to racing. But now, Mercedes newcomer George Russell seems to have become their preference in place of Hamilton as he has outscored him in 4 of the 5 races in 2022.
In the Spanish Grand Prix Free Practice session, Lewis Hamilton went out with his Mercedes a bit after George Russell was done with his lap. When Lewis’ engineer went ahead to let the Briton know about George’s lap times, Lewis almost snapped at him, saying that he did not want to know about that. He said, “I only ever want to know the fastest.”

From Lewis Hamilton’s tone, it was evident that the driver was irritated, and maybe it was because of the added attention that George Russell has been getting from the team, because of the performance he has delivered till now. Does this mean Lewis Hamilton is feeling threatened? In the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix, he knows he has to prove his worth by aiming for the podiums, so that people realise his supremacy once again. Now, only time will tell how Lewis Hamilton will fare in Sunday’s race in Barcelona.
