Lewis Hamilton uses Ayrton Senna’s words of wisdom to explain dramatic move on Sergio Perez at Belgian GP Sprint
Lewis Hamilton has spoken out about the penalty imposed on him for an overtaking maneuver at the Belgian GP Sprint Race.
The Belgian GP weekend is underway and Lewis Hamilton has already landed in some trouble with the FIA stewards. Fresh from his podium win at the British GP and a fourth-place finish at the Hungarian GP, Lewis is now confident that the pace of his Mercedes W14 is competent enough to allow him to race for podium victories. But now, it seems luck has come in the way of the seven-time World Champion as he keeps pushing for better results at every Grand Prix that he goes to.
The Belgian Grand Prix weekend has already had a Sprint Race ahead of the main event on Sunday. The Sprint session posed a new challenge to Hamilton as he went for a wheel-to-wheel against Sergio Perez. The Mexican, after some underwhelming performances at the last few Grands Prix, rediscovered his pace at the Hungarian GP with a much-awaited P3 finish. But as Lewis went for an overtake maneuver on Checo, the stewards noted the act and reviewed it later.
After scrutiny, the FIA Steward Derek Warwick imposed a 5-second time penalty on Lewis. This took away the Briton’s fifth place in the rankings at the Sprint race. Finally, Lewis was in the seventh spot, and he score only 2 points from the session. Explaining why he made that move on Sergio Perez that landed him in trouble, Lewis said, “If you’re not going for a gap then you’re no longer racing as Ayrton [Senna] always said. That’s what I did.”
Lewis Hamilton admits his race incident at the Belgian GP Sprint Race was unintentional
With the Belgian GP being the last race before the F1 circus takes a pause for the summer break, all the drivers are eager to score points for their team to end the first half of 2023 on a high. Thus, Lewis Hamilton did not want to leave even a single point to chance as he took advantage of an opportunity and went for an overtake at the Belgian GP Sprint. But he got into trouble, and later said, “I mean my only thought is that it’s tricky conditions out there, we’re all trying our best, and of course it wasn’t intentional.”
Lewis Hamilton’s current situation in Formula 1 seems quite dire. He narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the Hungarian GP, and he missed out on a couple of points at the Belgian Grand Prix Sprint as well. Now, it remains to be seen how he fares at the main race where he will start ahead of Max Verstappen in the third position since the Dutchman got a grid penalty for a new addition to his RB-19.
