Lewis Hamilton wishes he had Sergio Perez’s Red Bull seat as he admits Max Verstappen’s advantage ‘frustrates’ him

Lewis Hamilton has taken a slight dig at Sergio Perez as he implied he would have done better justice to the Red Bull seat.

Lewis Hamilton wishes he had Sergio Perez’s Red Bull seat as he admits Max Verstappen’s advantage ‘frustrates’ him

Max Verstappen has displayed an insane amount of talent in recent times that none of his rivals have been able to match up to. The Dutch lion roared to victory at the Belgian Grand Prix despite starting from the sixth spot due to a grid penalty. And his RB-19 showed such speed that Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff was compelled to say that Max’s Red Bull car makes all the other rival machines look like F2 cars competing against an F1 racecar.

The monopoly that Max Verstappen has established for himself in Formula 1 this year has been particularly frustrating for his old competitor Lewis Hamilton. Unfortunately for the Briton, Mercedes’ W-14 has failed to show the speed and the performance that the RB-19 has, and thus, no matter his efforts, Lewis cannot bridge the gap between him and Max. Thus, once the Belgian Grand Prix got over, he let his frustrations out during an interview.

Lewis was asked by one of the reporters at the post-race event if he was bothered by the undefeated streak that Max Verstappen has maintained for eight Grands Prix in a row now. To this, the seven-time World Champion said, “It is what it is. I don’t get frustrated if I can’t help it and in general I don’t get frustrated easily. Do I want to be as fast as them? Absolutely. Do I want a car that fast myself? Of course If I had been in Sergio’s car, Max wouldn’t have the time he has now, but that’s not the case now.”

Lewis Hamilton had given Max Verstappen a run for his money during the Dutchman’s first year running for the F1 World Championship in 2021. The Briton wants to be able to do that again but the Mercedes W-14 has not allowed him to. Yet, Sergio Perez has the exact same Red Bull car as Max Verstappen but the Mexican has failed to compete with the 25-year-old. Thus, Lewis believes he would have done justice to Checo’s Red Bull seat had it been his.

At the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton started in the third position ahead of Max Verstappen. But without much trouble, Red Bull’s golden boy surpassed his much more experienced colleague in a spectacular showdown as he scaled to the top of the charts. And with that, Lewis lost his top three position at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. In the end, the Briton came fourth, narrowly missing out on a podium win for the second time as he had done the same in Hungary.
