Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso have been competitors in the pinnacle of motorsports since their debut. From the 2007 season onwards, the two drivers raced in F1 as teammates at McLaren. While it seemed like the dream team at that time, they were extremely good but competitive. Further on, the duo went on to part ways and join different teams leading to their separation.

While Lewis Hamilton enjoyed a lot of success with Mercedes, the same couldn’t be said for Fernando Alonso as he struggled with McLaren. After being heavily disappointed for two season’s with McLaren who just couldn’t get it right, Nando’s frustrations could be observed ahead of the season opener in Melbourne. Before the Australian GP, Fernando was brutally honest about the team’s performance.

“Let’s see how competitive we can be this year. At least when you are driving alone, you are enjoying. Then when you have a car close to you and they go much faster than you, that’s a little bit less enjoyable,” he said during the press conference. The pre season tests also hadn’t really gone the Spaniard’s way with McLaren’s reliability woes. This wasn’t the end though.

During the press conference, Fernando Alonso was asked about what he wanted from the Liberty Media who were the nee owners if F1 at that point. He further replied, “Equal engines for everyone,” with former McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton adding, “And not Honda. I’m kidding…”. This turned out into an hilarious event which people had forgotten about for a few years until now. For the 2023 season, Alonso is competing with Aston Martin and races with a Mercedes engine.

The 2023 F1 season has been extremely kind for Fernando Alonso. The same can’t be said for Lewis Hamilton. Now that both the drivers have the same engine in their car, the Aston Martin is far more superior when it comes to the overall performance. It is evident in their results with Alonso bagging back to back podiums in the opening rounds of the F1 season. When everyone laughed at Alonso for his outrageous ask, it is evident that the tides have turned for now.
