“Lots of things to learn from Pierre”: Yuki Tsunoda wants to take some last-minute notes from Gasly before he leaves AlphaTauri

Ever since the mid-season demotion from Red Bull in 2019 due to unimpressive performance, AlphaTauri has been home to Pierre Gasly through all these years. And now, with the shift of two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso to Aston Martin, Gasly has signed with Alpine to drive beside Esteban Ocon in the upcoming 2023 season. This means that Japanese racing prodigy Yuki Tsunoda, who debuted in F1 with AlphaTauri in 2021, will become the senior driver in the Italian team.
As Red Bull’s sister team, AlphaTauri has been on a steady rise in terms of performance. It has established itself as a moderate midfield team, even though it’s results did decline in 2022 as compared to the previous seasons. And now that the responsibility of being the lead racer of such an up-and-coming team has fallen upon Tsunoda, the 22-year-old promised that he would improve in order to become fit for the role.
According to Yuki Tsunoda, there are still a few errors in his ways of approaching a race that he needs to correct before proceeding into next year. The Kanagawa-native also said he hopes to learn “a lot” from Pierre Gasly during the remaining Grands Prix of this year, so that he becomes better at racing in the premiere class of motorsports.
“I have to get back into good rhythm”: Yuki Tsunoda clarifies his goals before starting the 2023 season
For the upcoming season, Yuki Tsunoda is going to have Formula E Champion Nyck DeVries as his partner. And the Japanese believes that, being the more experienced racer in F1, he will be able to take up the role of leading AlphaTauri with some good results. He said, “I think I have to learn a lot of things during the rest of [the season], from Pierre, for example. For sure, the kind of mistakes I did in Singapore have to definitely reduce. I have to get back into good rhythm.”
In other news, only three races are left before the current F1 season ends with the finale in Abu Dhabi. And as of now, AlphaTauri’s position does not seem to be that satisfactory as they have fallen behind Aston Martin by only 11 points and are being challenged by Haas, who have the same points as them. Now, it only remains to be seen how AlphaTauri manage to improve their rank in the Constructors’ Standings.
