“He was the one who was the most loyal,” Mark Webber has an unpopular opinion on the Oscar Piastri-Alpine drama
The Formula 1 2022 silly season drama is still not at an end as more comments have come in on the incident centering Oscar Piastri and Alpine. And this time, it is former Red Bull racer Mark Webber who has decided to give his take on what went down between the French team and the F2 2021 Champion which finally led the two parties into a legal battle. Even before stepping into Formula 1, Oscar Piastri made the headlines with the controversies regarding his shift from Alpine to McLaren, and now Mark Webber has something to say about it.
While most people have taken Alpine’s side since Piastri decided to refuse their deal for one from McLaren despite being their reserve driver and one of the recruits under the Alpine Drivers’ Academy, Webber interestingly believes the young Australian racer was not at fault. Webber believes if Alpine wanted Piastri to take the place of departing driver Fernando Alonso, they should have made him feel “more wanted”. And since the 21-year-old never felt any importance at the French outfit, he decided to try out his luck at McLaren.
It all started when Fernando Alonso announced his move to Aston Martin following Sebastian Vettel saying that he would retire at the end of 2022. Alpine suddenly declared they are recruiting Oscar Piastri while the Aussie said he has not signed any legal document claiming the same. Then he took up McLaren’s offer to replace Daniel Ricciardo, and Alpine took him to court where it was established that Piastri has made use of some legal loopholes and he could not be held guilty.
Mark Webber believes Oscar Piastri has shown “as much loyalty as he could” to Alpine
When Alpine realised that Piastri, a driver under their Academy and their emplyment, was shifting to McLaren, they did not shy away from saying that he had proven to be disloyal and had no integrity. But speaking on this matter, Mark Webber said, “Ironically, he was showing as much loyalty as he could do under the circumstances because he was waiting for further answers. He was the one who was the most loyal. All the other shareholders or people were certainly a lot less patient.”
In the next season, Oscar Piastri has a lot to prove as he will be taking F1 veteran Daniel Ricciardo’s place beside Lando Norris at McLaren. He has also stirred up quite a drama in the paddocks without even entering them as a regular racer, and he needs to show he is worthy of the hype as all eyes will be on him.
