“My ambitions are higher…I want more than that”: Pierre Gasly talks about his future in F1

Pierre Gasly

When Pierre Gasly came into Red Bull to partner with Max Verstappen in the initial races of 2019, he failed to impress his higher-ups in the Milton-Keynnes-based team, and was demoted to their sister team Scuderia Toto Rosso for the rest of the year. In his place, Red Bull recruited Alex Albon, and RB Team Boss Christian Horner said they would evaluate both the racers to determine who would drive beside Max Verstappen in 2020.

The decisions were tilted in Alex Albon’s favour as he got the second seat at Red Bull beside Verstappen for the 2020 season. And Pierre Gasly, although a brilliant and consistent racer, was stuck with AlphaTauri–the rebranded version of Toro Rosso. But there was always a possibility of him returning to Red Bull, especially after he put up some brilliant performances in 2020 and got a Grand Prix victory at Monza, with his mid-field-level car.

But Pierre Gasly’s expectations of joining Red Bull were quelled when the team recruited Sergio Perez after letting Albon go because of his inability to deliver some good results. Albon was out of F1 for a year as he could not land a seat, and Perez proved to be the perfect teammate for Verstappen as he is fast, experienced, and reliable. And now, Sergio Perez has been retained by Red Bull for two more years, and Gasly’s future in the Milton-Keynnes-based team seems a faraway dream.

Pierre Gasly has always known that Sergio Perez is the perfect second driver that Red Bull has been searching for ever since the departure of Daniel Ricciardo from the team. As of now, Gasly is bound to AlphaTauri by a contract till the end of 2023, but he is desparately looking for better options to resort to, after he is released from his commitment to AlphaTauri.

Many a times before, Pierre Gasly has expressed his wishes of rejoining Red Bull after he displayed great performance in 2020 in the AlphaTauri. But after this year’s contract extension between Red Bull and Sergio Perez, it is quite apparent that the Milton-Keynnes-based team has some future plans for the Mexican racer, and the possibility of Gasly taking the second seat at Red Bull is almost next to nothing.

Speaking of his future in Formula 1, Pierre Gasly has commented, “This decision (Sergio extending his stay at Red Bull) has an impact on my career and ambitions. That’s why we now have to look at how to move forward.

He also said, “My ambitions are higher than just fighting for a place in the top 10, I want more than that. In recent years I have proven what I am capable of. Also in more difficult times, because this year we are not as competitive as last season.”
