“Next season, we’re going to put the heat on him”: Carlos Sainz takes a dig at Max Verstappen with a claim on Ferrari’s improvements in 2023

Max Verstappen had quite an easy win at the 2022 Formula One World Championships as he guaranteed himself the golden trophy with four races still left in the schedule. But when this season has started off, things had not looked so uncomplicated for the Dutchman, who suffered a tragic retirement at the very first Grand Prix of the year in Bahrain. At that time, Ferrari, with their powerful F1-75 and great lineup of drivers, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, were being favored for the Constructors’ Championship victory with the Monegasque taking the WDC win.

But as the season proceeded, Ferrari fell back in their progress and at one point, Red Bull successfully surpassed them in the standings. From then on, the Milton-Keynes-based team did not have to look back. On the other hand, Ferrari fell from grace, and is currently fighting with Mercedes to keep their spot at the second position in the World Constructors’ Championship.

Even more than Charles Leclerc, it has been Carlos Sainz who fell prey to Ferrari’s numerous engine troubles, reliability issues, and tactical errors which caused him to retire from a total of six races till now in this season. Speaking to NOS, the Spaniard admitted. “I could have made it harder for Max, especially in the first races. Our car was very good then, but I didn’t feel completely comfortable behind the wheel then.”

He also said, “It’s very unfortunate that Charles and I didn’t get to fight with Max more as Red Bull Racing became more and more dominant, but I don’t begrudge him this milestone. He put in an unprecedented season. Next season we’re going to put the heat on him.”

Thus, it remains to be seen how Carlos Sainz and his team from Maranello manages to improve upon their mistakes of this year and bring back a much stronger package next season to aim for the Championship win over Red Bull and Mercedes.
