Sergio Perez fires comeback warning at rivals, says he will make sure to ‘not leave the podium again’
Sergio Perez has talked about his ambitions for the future races of 2023 after getting back to back podium wins in Hungary and Belgium.
The tumultuous Belgian Grand Prix has come to an end and Sergio Perez has reigned supreme over all his rivals except for his own teammate Max Verstappen. The Mexican had time and again failed to perform well in the same Red Bull machinery with which his Dutch partner has scripted history by winning eight Grands Prix in a row. All his fans were baffled how Checo could perform so poorly that he could not even score any points at a few of his outings while his teammate was out there defying all odds to attain victory.
But now, Sergio Perez has announced his comeback with two back to back podium finishes right before the summer break. As the Formula 1 circus gears up for a pause for a few weeks, Checo has fired a warning to his rivals. He said, “I look forward to not leaving the podium again from now until the end of the year. It’s been a bit of a rough patch but we’ve overcome it, and score the podium.”
With a masterful overtaking maneuver on Charles Leclerc, Perez had quickly claimed the leading spot at the Belgian GP in Spa. But he could not put up a good defence against a charging Max Verstappen who snatched the top spot after starting the race from the fifth position. Despite losing out to Max, Sergio is happy he is ‘best of the rest’ after capturing the second position ahead of Leclerc’s Ferrari.

Sergio Perez admits he gave up on fight against Max Verstappen at the Belgian GP
Max Verstappen was served a 5-grid-place penalty ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix because of his Red Bull mechanics fixing one of his car parts. But the Dutchman remained unfazed of the fact that his rivals had a headstart on him. He quickly climbed up the ranks once the race kicked off and managed to take over the top spot easily enough by beating his own teammate Sergio Perez to it. Commenting on leaving his lead in the race for Max, Checo said, “I was doing my own race, Max came through pretty fast – nothing I could do there. Then it was just about bringing it home.“
Once the season resumes after the summer break post the Belgian GP, Sergio Perez will have a massive task on his hands. Owing to his poor performances in some of the races, he has already lost the fight for the World Championship in 2023 to Max Verstappen, but he is still in risk of losing his second place in the rankings as well. Fernando Alonso’s form at Aston Martin has flourished by leaps and bounds and the former F1 Champ is only 40 points away from catching up with the Mexican.
