Red Bull and Dr Helmut Marko have created one of the best driver academies in motorsport. The Austrian energy drinks manufacturer has backed many drivers since the start of their career in order to support them financially and make sure that they are turned into flying beasts when they are on the track. During these years, the team has managed to procure many successful candidates.

With Sebastian Vettel winning 4 back to back titles for the team, it was clear that the Red Bull junior driver programme was a huge hit. The programme further picked up Max Verstappen where they put him in a F1 car pretty early on in his career. Thankfully he proved the critics wrong and Helmut Marko was applauded for his efforts. With the new era coming upon us, a lot of things have changed.

With junior academy driver Liam Lawson poised to take the next Red bull seat, Dr Helmut Marko had to make sure that he will be able to handle it. Driving in Japanese Super Formula is truly a challenge due to the language barrier and adaptability. The series will make the driver more self dependent which would be a good thing. Which is why Japan was the solution to guide Liam.

During an interview with motorsport.com , this is what the Red Bull team advisor had to say. “One of the most frustrating things is the difference between an F2 car and F1, and how your suitability for F1 can be judged from F2. Super Formula is closer to F1, and people are aware of that fact,” he said. This in turn will give Liam Lawson a surprisingly good advantage over his competitors.

With new rules and regulations being implemented for next season, the new form of aerodynamics being introduced in Japanese Super Formula will be very similar to F1 . Here is what Liam Lawson had to say. “Every season is the same… you need to be fighting for the championship. But from my side, I want to win anyway. The goal is to get to F1, but I want to do really well in this championship as well.”

Dr Helmut Marko has always been hard on his students and he wasn’t gonna tone his methods down anytime soon. It is good to see the progress that Liam Lawson has made. Having almost won the DTM title, it is clear that the Kiwi is not afraid of trying out different motorsport categories. Super Formula will just be another step towards F1 and Lawson is hungrier than ever.
