Susie Wolff passes verdict on inclusion of women in F1, saying, “We just need more young women entering the sport”
Susie Wolff
Former Williams development driver Susie Wolff believes that if Formula 1 has to have a top female driver in their ranks, then there needs to be more women drivers entering Formula 1 at the grassroots level. Susie Wolff herself came really close to getting a seat in Formula 1, but it never materialized and she had to be satisfied with only a practice session in an F1 car.
Formula 1 has seen women participation in the past, but in very limited numbers. The list of women who have entered in Grand Prix Racing contains only five names. The latest name was Giovanna Amati in 1992, however, she couldn’t even start the race. The last female racer to actually race was Lella Lombardi, back in 1976. Susie Wolff believes that whatever much she has been able to achieve in the world of Motorsport should inspire more young girls to step into this world. She has started an initiative called ‘Dare to be Different’ which recruits girls as young as 8 to take part in racing activities. All of this is done with the aim of unearthing a female racing talent who can make a mark in Formula 1.
Susie Wolff spoke to the Irish Times and said, “We just need more young women entering the sport, there are just not enough women competing to rise to the top. Naturally it would help to have one young woman racing, I believe when you can see it you can believe it, open up the sport, make it more accessible and you will inspire the next generation.”

Susie Wolff reminisces about her time at Williams
Susie Wolff spoke about the times when she had to wait on the sidelines at Williams. She says that it was really unfortunate for her because during the time when she peaked, there were already two really strong drivers at Williams. This is one of the major reasons why she never managed to secure a seat at Williams. “I had Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, it was a very strong line-up so I don’t have any bitterness that I didn’t get my chance,” said Susie Wolff.
She continued and said that she did indeed face some difficult moments during her career. The biggest one of them was when she was faced with a lot of skepticism upon stepping into a Formula 1 car. She had the added pressure of proving that she was no less than any male racer. However, Susie Wolff believes that it is a part and parcel of the whole experience.
