Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, has made a bold claim by indicating that Lewis Hamilton is going to add another F1 title before George Russell is able to win the first of his F1 career.
George Russell is doing a terrific 2022 season for the Mercedes F1 team and as things, is ahead of the former 7-time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers standings.
After 17 rounds, Russell has amassed 202 points whereas Hamilton has only been able to put up 170 points in front of his name. However, despite the form, that the 23-year-old has shown in his rookie season for Mercedes, Toto Wolff feels that when the Silver Arrows would have a car worthy of challenging for the title, Lewis Hamilton will be the one to secure it first for Mercedes.
Wolff while dwelling over the prospect said, “We just need to provide them with the car so that they’re capable to win races and championships.”
“If we can do that, George can become a world champion and Lewis can add another title to his seven. It really comes down to us what good job we can do as a team.”
Toto Wolff is confident about Mercedes winning Championships in the near future
George Rusell first made his appearance in a Silver Arrows livery during the Sakhir Grand Prix of 2020 where he missed out on a win because of a car-related issue.
However, since making his move permanent to Mercedes, he has done well for the team and Toto Wolff has praised him by saying, “He could have had one [win] in Bahrain when he jumped in the car two years ago.”
“George is a great personality. He was obviously hoping to be in the Mercedes and win races and championships. He got that timing wrong, but at least he has progressed to the midfield now.”
He further adds, “So that time is going to come. He will win races, he will race for championships, I think he absolutely has it in him. But maybe there’s another Lewis championship in between.”
While Wolff has backed Lewis Hamilton to win an F1 title before George Russell, he has indicated that the duo has not had many close encounters during the current campaign of the sport.
“They haven’t had a close racing between themselves [before that], after Zandvoort, for my feeling that was a little bit too close. [It] could have gone wrong. But they know, they are experts.”
However, despite the inner competition within the team, Toto Wolff is confident that Russel has got huge respect for what Hamilton has done in his F1 career.
