Three Reasons for Fernando Alonso’s surprise move to Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso
The news of Fernando Alonso‘s shift to Aston Martin came as a surprise to many, especially considering the fact that the Spaniard has been performing quite satisfactorily in this season of Formula 1 2022 as an Alpine racer. The two-time World Champion has made it quite clear that he returned to F1 after taking a hiatus from the sport in 2018 as he is still confident that he has it in him to win his third title as well. As Fernando’s move seems to be quite shocking for all the F1 fans, the reasons behind his contract with Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll’s team has been under the public scrutiny ever since it was publicised by Aston Martin.
Many reasons have been unearthed by the F1 pundits as to why Fernando Alonso sought to move to Aston Martin when his career was going quite well at Alpine. Of all these reasons, three have a concrete basis and deserve to be discussed. When Alonso returned to F1 in 2021 to enter into Alpine, he had said that he agreed with the team’s vision of attaining the World Championship title with him. And now that Alonso is making the move to Aston Martin, it seems that the Spaniard has lost faith and believes Alpine would not be able to give him the title-worthy car that he expects.
There are many factors which led to Fernando Alonso taking the seat at Aston Martin beside Lance Stroll in place of German racer Sebastian Vettel, who recently declared that he would be stepping away from F1 in the next season.

Fernando Alonso grabbed the chance to become the face of such an ambitious team like Aston Martin
Speaking of the important reasons why Fernando Alonso considered it the best to move to Aston Martin following Sebastian Vettel’s retirement, one of the most talked-about ones is that Fernando Alonso knows his deal with Aston Martin will make him the face of the British team.
Since the team has bagged deals with two of the most experienced racers of current times within a period of 24 months–Vettel and Alonso–it can be considered that Aston Martin has huge ambitions for their future and Alonso wanted to be an integral part of that. Thus, Fernando Alonso chose to shift to Aston Martin the moment he saw an opening in the team.
Fernando Alonso did not want to deal with the possibility of Oscar Piastri usurping him at Alpine
Even as a two-time World Champion, Fernando Alonso had a hard time finding himself a seat in 2019 as his contract with McLaren had come to an end. At that time, the Woking-based team deemed it fit to terminate their deal with the experienced Spaniard and welcome youngsters like Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz to their team.
And now, in Alpine, Fernando Alonso was almost in the same situation where the team could have decided to let him go and take in a young racer like Oscar Piastri at any moment. But, in place of that, Thus, perhaps Alonso saw it best to move to another team by himself, before Alpine could bid him adieu in order to appoint Oscar Piastri as their new racer.
Fernando Alonso could hardly resist the huge offer that Lawrence Stroll presented in front of him
Capital is always a big part of any deal, and in this case, we can always assume that Aston Martin made their final move to lure in Fernando Alonso by giving him a hugely expensive contract. While Canadian multimillionaire Lawrence Stroll backs the British team, news broke out only a few days ago that Aston Martin has secured yet another big investor–the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund–and thus, it can be concluded that Aston Martin got a huge inflow of cash, with which, they could solidify the deal with Fernando Alonso.
Thus, these are the reasons which explain why Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin is a plausible one, although it came as a shock to most people.
