At the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP, Lewis Hamilton fell short on the last lap and came second in the Drivers’ Championship. Max Verstappen was able to overtake Hamilton as he was on a fresh pair of soft tires in comparison to Hamilton’s old hard compounds.
However, how things went down under the then FIA Race Director, Michael Masi, has still left the Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, with some bitterness. Max Verstappen overtook Hamilton just a few minutes after the ending of the safety car.
While recently talking about the injustice toward Lewis Hamiton, Toto Wolff gave a strong response.
That individual did not follow the rules and let all that happen. He is a totally inconsequential person: he lives on the other side of the world and no one is interested in He really was a pathological egomaniac.Toto Wolff said in a conversation with The Wall Street Journal
Mercedes issued two protest notices following the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP under the International Sports Code and Formula 1 Sports Regulations, claiming Verstappen’s pass over Hamilton violated Article 48.8 and Race Classification violation of Article 48.12 during the race. The FIA dismissed the protest and later, Mercedes withdrew their appeal.
Toto Wolff has reportedly decided to join Mercedes in Suzuka
Toto Wolff had decided to skip the Japanese GP amidst the ongoing Mercedes issues. Despite predicting a better start to the season, the team saw significant difficulties during the Bahrain Grand Prix and subsequent races.
The team’s decline was worsened by the double DNF during the Australian Grand Prix. As a result, speculations suggest Wolff is losing interest or is not happy with the results.
However, at the start of the week, as reported by Sky Sports, the news of Wolff joining the team in Suzuka came to light. While the decision to withdraw from the Japanese GP was made before the current season began and had nothing to do with the team’s performance in Australia, the team principal had a change of mind.
The team is working extremely hard, to perform better at the Japanese GP ahead this weekend. After the whole double DNF fiasco at Albert Park, the team had their hands full with the repairs. However, despite the woes, Wolff has decided to maintain a positive outlook going ahead into the 2024 season.
