The Abu Dhabi GP weekend is underway. The season finale has seen some important moments over the years including the infamous 2021 title decider. Max Verstappen defeated Lewis Hamilton to the world title on the last lap of the race after a controversial decision by then-Race Director Michael Masi. Now, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has once again expressed his anger over the race.

Wolff reckoned that he doesn’t feel like it has been two years since the fiasco in 2021 as time has passed quite quickly for the Austrian billionaire. The 51-year-old pointed out that things have changed in F1 with Red Bull toppling the Silver Arrows as the dominant force in F1. Nevertheless, Toto Wolff claimed that the team was now focused on making Lewis Hamilton win again.

We are living in a hamster wheel where time passes so quickly that it doesn’t feel like it has been two years. You can see how quickly the pecking order changes... But we have to look forward, learn from the past, and the push now is to make Lewis win quickly again.

The Mercedes team boss made it clear that he is still angry over the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP. Wolff claimed he had a personal drive to make Hamilton an eight-time F1 world champion. Moreover, the 51-year-old reaffirmed that his team still wishes to be able to go back and change the results of the race from two years ago.

I have a personal anger, and drive to make him win the eighth title because he should have had it.

Recently, Toto Wolff had taken a dig at Michael Masi when he was asked about Mercedes’ battle with Ferrari in the championship.

Toto Wolff on Lewis Hamilton’s future in F1

Lewis Hamilton signed a contract extension with Mercedes earlier this year. This would see the seven-time champion race for the Silver Arrows till at least 2025. Subsequently, Toto Wolff mentioned that Hamilton was on the top of his game and would soon be 39 years old. The 51-year-old pointed out that Fernando Alonso is still racing at the age of 42.

He is 39 in January, and Fernando (Alonso – 42) is still going strong. As long as you look after yourself, you do the best preparation, physically and mentally, and develop different areas to when you are 25, then yes.

Wolff highlighted that an F1 can race well into their 40s nowadays. As long as the driver works on their fitness and stays in shape. Certainly, this has been the case with even Kimi Raikkonen retiring from the sport only after he was 41. Lewis Hamilton is one of the fittest drivers in the paddock and would be looking to continue for the foreseeable future.

Hamilton and Mercedes are aiming to win another world title in the future. However, the Silver Arrows need to develop a car capable of fighting Red Bul at the front of the field. The Brackley-based team will be bringing a new car in 2024 that is expected to be a big improvement on the W14. Although, it remains to be seen if Lewis Hamilton can fight for wins in 2024.
