Toto Wolff reveals Mercedes’ improvements DO NOT stop here, as ‘big’ updates will come ahead of Silverstone
Toto Wolff has talked about the big improvements Mercedes have up their sleeves for their outing at Silverstone.
Earlier this season, Silver Arrows fans were upset with Lewis Hamilton exiting the Qualifying ahead of the Miami GP and George Russell failing to reach the top 10 at the Azerbaijan GP. But now, the two racers regularly make it to the top 5 in Saturday’s quali sessions and this huge jump has only been possible because of Mercedes‘ tireless quest to become more competitive. Lewis and George have contributed the improvement in their results to their entire team, especially mentioning the hard work of Mick Schumacher, the current test driver for Toto Wolff’s team.
The turning point for the Stuttgart outfit, according to several pundits, has been their double podium win at the Spanish GP. And now, they are confident they can give a good fight to their customer team Aston Martin to maintain their second position in the F1 World Constructors’ Championship table. With his spectacular fight with Fernando Alonso and a P2 finish at the Canadian GP, Lewis Hamilton proved Mercedes are back in the game. And had it not been for George Russell‘s crash, Mercedes could have expected a repeat of their Spanish GP feat of winning two podium places.
Despite the improvements, Lewis Hamilton has claimed there is a long way to go before the W14 can be called perfect. He listed the shortcomings in his Mercedes machine saying, “We need more downforce in the rear, better traction and less air resistance.” But the seven-time World Champion does not need to wait too long as Toto Wolff said, “We have two more races in the next few races. A big one at Silverstone, the other before the summer break.“
Toto Wolff seems hope as he talks about some foundational changes in the Mercedes W14
At the start of their 2023 F1 Championship campaign, Mercedes could not even compete with the frontrunners Red Bull and Aston Martin for several reasons. The Silver Arrows had poor speed on the straights and they fell back while accelerating out of the slow corners. The W14 also has a larger rear wing when compared with the RB19 and the AMR23. But speaking on how the team is taking up the role of changing proving upon these shortcomings, Toto Wolff said, “We’re getting better and better there too. The new platform we have now helps us there.”
For a long time between 2014 and 2021, Mercedes have been the undisputed Champions with back to back title victories for an overwhelming 8 times. But the rule changes ahead of the 2022 season saw the German team somewhat fall back in their results. And the new improvements only go to show that Mercedes are on the verge of getting back to their winning ways, and if given another year or two, they will be back on the top of the charts once again.
