The events of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix still remain a matter of MAJOR dispute. Despite the FIA ruling holding up Max Verstappen as the winner, some still believe that Lewis Hamilton was ‘robbed that day’. And because the FIA admitted ‘human error’ during the safety car saga, some say the result should be overturned. Recently, Lando Norris reignited these conversations with a major slip-up.
Earlier, Verstappen had pointed out Norris as his ‘best friend’ on the F1 grid. He had said to the Daily Mail: “I get on really well with Lando because he is just himself and normal. He is my best friend on the grid. He loves what he is doing. I could see clearly from years ago in go-karting that he was very quick, though we never raced against each other. Everything just came to him really naturally as a driver.” Now, this, coming from Norris is especially hilarious.
In a clip from his Twitch stream that’s now going viral on social media, Norris, said, pointing to a helmet: “This one here, is when Lewis [Hamilton] won his eighth world cha…” After realizing what he’d just done, his face contorted in embarrassment, and he dipped it below the camera. The helmet that he was likely pointing to, strongly resembled his helmet from the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix.
That race is when Hamilton won his seventh world title. So, it’s possible that the McLaren driver made a mistake with the number of world titles. Otherwise, it’s also possible he wanted to joke or was trying to say something else. In any case, it stirred up quite a storm on social media. This is probably the realization [‘What have I done?’] that hit Norris when he dipped below the camera’s coverage. After re-emerging, he laughed and said: “Oh, no.”
Lando Norris’s slip-up reignited Max Verstappen-Lewis Hamilton ‘debates’

For this slip-up, Lando Norris is receiving some perhaps unwarranted flak on Twitter. Some have taken his comments at face value, with regards to the (likely) context, and are using it as a form of evidence. That, even Max Verstappen’s ‘so-called’ best friend, Norris, thinks that Lewis Hamilton is an eight-time world champion. Some Verstappen fans are expressing disappointment, while others are just making jokes about the situation.
It seems like an unfortunate, but not malicious, slip-up from Norris. It could also be a joke – the Briton can definitely be playful sometimes. As always though, everyone draws their own conclusions. At the very least, it’s a rather hilarious ‘incident’ – especially when coming from Verstappen’s best friend.
