“We were fighting for the top-three”: Lewis Hamilton reacts as his chassis gets replaced after Qualifying crash

As we are nearing the Sprint Race in the eleventh Grand Prix of this season, fans are stoked to see who comes out victorious in the Austrian Grand Prix in the Red Bull Ring, Spielberg. This will be the second Sprint Race of this year, as we have already had one in Imola a few weeks back. Due to a double header in July, we have back-to-back races in Silverstone and Austria. Last week, Mercedes had a bittersweet campaign at Silverstone as George Russell had a DNF while Lewis Hamilton brought home a podium.
While Mercedes came into Austria with renewed hopes of earning some precious Championship points for both their racers, a shocking double crash in the Qualifying on Friday proved that the start to the weekend was not so favorable for Mercedes. As the situation stands right now, the Mercedes engineers have taken a look at both the W13’s, which have endured massive damage, but with some tweaks and fixes, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are expected to go out for today’s Sprint Race.
Mercedes decided to do a chassis replacement on Lewis Hamilton’s car following Qualifying damage
Due to the huge crash which landed Lewis Hamilton in P9 in the Qualifying for the Asutrian Sprint Race, the Briton’s car had to be repaired overnight so that he could take part in the Sprint. Lewis’ mechanics have investigated the damage made to his car, and it appeared that the impact of the accident had destroyed the “crash structure” of his chassis. So, they have decided to replace it with an older chassis that Hamilton has already raced with before.
While Mercedes had not planned for any new upgrades to add to their cars for this week, the crash during the Qualifying urged them to make the chassis replacement so that Lewis Hamilton could still take part in the races of this weekend after the huge crash that he had to endure on Friday.
Reacting to the incident during the Qualis, Lewis said, “I’m incredibly disappointed in myself, ultimately, and so sorry to the team.”
He also said, “Everybody worked so hard to put this car together and I never like to bring it back damaged, and we were fighting for a top-three, I think. I don’t have an answer for it. I swapped the back end in Turn 7 and that was that.”
