Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has shared his thoughts on Daniel Ricciardo recording the fastest lap in the closing stages of the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday. This saw McLaren’s Lando Norris being denied an extra point in his fight with Max Verstappen in the drivers’ championship.
Max Verstappen, who currently leads the drivers’ championship by 52 points, has been fairly incompetent against Norris in recent races. Toto Wolff has spoken in favor of Ricciardo after Red Bull has been accused of gaining an unfair advantage by using the 35-year-old to help Verstappen.
I think you have to play all your cards. I don't think it was unfair, not at all . It was within the rules. The drivers were not unfair to each other. There was no problem.Toto Wolff said (via f1ingenerale)
Lando Norris now has to secure a win in all of the remaining races to stand a chance of claiming the title this season. The upcoming races will therefore be an exciting treat to Formula 1 fans all around the world.
Toto Wolff apologizes to Lewis Hamilton after Singapore GP
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was not happy after starting third on the grid at Marina Bay and finishing P6. He was overcome with tire degradation issues and poor planning, which cost him a few places in the 62-lap race.
Lewis Hamilton started on a set of soft tires, attempting a bold strategy for the Silver Arrows. The 39-year-old, however, soon realized that his team’s bets had taken a wrong turn as he struggled to find grip and balance. Toto Wolff later offered his apologies to the Ferrari-bound driver, stating that the team read the race incorrectly.
Yeah Lewis, sorry. We gave you a car that was just not good enough here and obviously, we read the race wrong, but it wouldn't have made a difference. We were just slow today.Toto Wolff said on the radio after the Singapore Grand Prix
Mercedes will now try to salvage their form to deliver better results in the last five races of the campaign.
