Chelsea have reportedly received an approach from Bayern Munich for highly-rated coach Anthony Barry. But the club are disappointed with their former head coach Thomas Tuchel for making his interest public. According to reports, Barry is interested in linking up with Tuchel again in Germany. Although, it is thought that Bayern are yet to offer Chelsea any compensation for the 36-year-old.

Tuchel confirmed that he wanted to take Barry from Chelsea as part of his Bayern backroom team. Confirming his plans, Tuchel reportedly said: “My coaching staff wasn’t prepared either, so a big thank you to their families for their flexibility. Arno Michels and Zsolt Löw, who have been working with me for over ten years, will be there. We’re hoping to add Anthony Barry, who is currently at Chelsea.”

Although they were already aware the club could face a battle to keep hold of Barry. Chelsea were disappointed that Tuchel went public with his desire to reunite with the coach. Barry was first taken to Stamford Bridge by Frank Lampard. Tuchel was sacked by Chelsea in September, just three months after the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital takeover. He was forced to leave England just before Christmas because the club did not give him gardening leave which would have extended his visa.

Chelsea could come face-to-face with their former head coach before the end of the season. Provided if Bayern and Chelsea both qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions League. Tuchel won the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea within just four months of taking the hot seat from Lampard.

Barry is under contract at Stamford Bridge. This means Chelsea must agree to his release even if he expresses a desire to join up with Tuchel again. Following the sacking of Lampard, Barry stayed at Chelsea to work with Tuchel and the pair won the Champions League. This was before becoming a member of Graham Potter’s first-team staff. He worked for the Republic of Ireland, before joining Roberto Martinez in Belgium for the World Cup. And now he has moved with Martinez to Portugal. Barry was the first student at St George’s Park to have course research published in an academic journal.

Bayern Munich’s current squad is among the best in Europe. And taking over the German champions comes with instant pressure to succeed, new coach Thomas Tuchel said on Saturday.

The club surprisingly parted ways with Julian Nagelsmann on Friday. They wasted no time in bringing in former Chelsea coach Tuchel in a deal to 2025 as his replacement. Bayern bosses blamed the team’s performances in the past months for the sacking of Nagelsmann, with Bayern in second place in the Bundesliga. They face Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals next month and are also through to the German Cup last eight.

Tuchel, in his first news conference as Bayern Manager, said, “They are one of the best clubs in the world. Their DNA is about winning and also the way, but firstly about winning. The responsibilities are clear and there is absolutely no misunderstanding. The squad assembled by Bayern is one of the most talented and best squads in Europe. You can challenge for every title with this squad. That puts me under pressure but at Bayern it’s about winning all titles. We are here to win all the titles.”

Tuchel’s arrival comes just as Bayern prepare to face leaders Borussia Dortmund, one of Tuchel’s former teams, next week in the Bundesliga and City in the Champions League quarter-finals on April 11. Tuchel said, “I would have liked to have a few more training sessions but I won’t have too many looking at the schedule and the international break this week. There is a chance to win all the titles. There is no need for big changes in the system or the processes.”

Tuchel, a long-time Bayern target since their first attempt to sign him in 2018, won the Champions League for Chelsea in 2021 after replacing Frank Lampard but has been without a job since being sacked by the English side last year. The 49-year-old built a reputation as a forward-thinking tactician in the Bundesliga during his time at Mainz 05 before taking over at Dortmund and leading them to German Cup success in 2017.
