The African side came into the knockout stages having topped their group by beating the likes of Belgium and Denmark but nobody expected them to get past Luis Enrique’s side in this round of 16 encounters.
Morocco had significantly less possession and didn’t trouble the Spanish goalkeeper, Unai Simon at all during the regulation period. The Spanish attackers failed to find gaps between the Moroccan defenders and couldn’t create enough chances to score a goal and the match was very tightly poised with neither team opening their account with the fate of the game set to be decided on penalties.
Morocco’s hero of the match was their goalkeeper Yassine Bounnou who saved three back-to-back penalties to take his side into the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history. It was a great moment both for the players and the fans and Morocco will play Portugal on Saturday with a semi-final place up for grasp.
