Jorge Mendes, who was Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent for a large part of his career opened up on his split with the Portuguese star for the first time. Ronaldo is alleged to have broken up his relationship with Mendes after the agent failed to land a transfer deal in Europe.

Jorge Mendes has continued to maintain a friendly relationship with the Portuguese legend and stated that he has a great relationship with Ronaldo. He said, “Ronaldo is a special player and a special person for me. If I, a few years ago, thought that I could have a player with half the value of Cristiano, I would sign for less!”

He also added, “And all of us Portuguese should be proud to have had and still have a player like him. I’ve always said it and I’ll say it all my life: he was and is the best player in the entire history of world football! I don’t have the slightest doubt, even compared to others.” The main reason for the break up is actually after Mendes couldn’t secure a deal with Bayern Munich or Chelsea last summer for Ronaldo.

The 57-year-old also said, “He’s an example for young people and he’s done everything a great professional would have to do… because he’s the best of them all! But it is also true that he was a virtuous player when he was young: you were talking about Ronaldinho Gaucho and Messi, but when he was young, Cristiano was also virtuous!  And strong in the ‘one on one’, and explosive! Cristiano has turned into a machine! Many people never really thought about that growth process that led him, in fact, to be the best in history. And for me, he will always be the best in history.”

Ronaldo and Mendes parted ways after a move to a Champions League side failed to materialize following his bitter United exit. As a result, Ronaldo’s manager and close friend Ricky Regufe ultimately brokered his £175m-a-year move to Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo left Manchester United in November after the club terminated his contract for giving a hugely controversial and critical interview to Piers Morgan. Before he left, Ronaldo was frequently seen to be visibly angry and frustrated on the pitch with his teammates. Christian Eriksen played alongside the Portuguese striker during the first half of the campaign and saw Ronaldo’s ego disrupt the team dynamic.

Ronaldo does not have a great record from dead-ball situations. His trademark ‘knuckleball’ technique saw him score some memorable free-kicks during his first spell at United, between 2003 and 2009. Eriksen told Owen Hargreaves in a free kick master class, “Even now at the club we have multiple takers who, if he’s had a good day, he’s going to have it”

The Dane also added, “I did take one [instead of Ronaldo], I think, but he wasn’t too happy with that! But then with the three we have now, it’s [about] where we are on the pitch, how people are feeling – so it’s like ‘you had the last one, I’ll have the next one’.”

Overall, Ronaldo has scored 59 free kicks in his career since turning professional in 2002, with a conversion rate of just over six percent. Twelve of those have come in the Premier League, putting him in joint third place on the all-time list of free-kick scorers in the league.
