Former F1 driver believes George Russell to pose ‘ultimate challenge’ against Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes

According to ex-Formula 1 racer Perry McCarthy, Mercedes rookie George Russel will be the number 1 driver for the Brackley-based team. Moreover, he will be taking over the reins from 7-time world champion and teammate Lewis Hamilton and might be his ultimate challenger in the upcoming 2022 season.

Former Andrea Moda driver Perry McCarthy spoke highly about Russel and believes he will have an instant impression “I think he’s going to be tapping Lewis on the shoulder, I really do,” McCarthy told Formula1News UK. “And the other thing is, is that, you know, if Lewis has developed any chinks in his armour because he does feel a little bit low, then George will be prying those open, you know, he’s going to be on the attack.”

“Your absolute best scenario, as a racing driver, is to join a team, where you’ve got an absolutely brilliant, established star,” the 60-year-old explained as to how Russel benefits by sharing space with Lewis who is a legend of the sport.

“And then your job is to beat him, because suddenly, if you’ve just jumped in, and you’re beating the guy that holds pretty much every record going, then you’re looked at as being brilliant. So you know, racing drivers are selfish” he added.

“You’re in this, there is an enjoyment and there is that urge to compete, but you’re looking at the brand, you’re looking at reputation, you’re looking at delivering, you’re looking at winning, and your worst enemy is actually your team-mate all the way through. Because they’re perceived to have the same tyres, the same car, the same engine, the same opportunities. So that clearly is exactly what George is after” concluded Macarthy.

Russell signed for Williams in 2019 as a part of the Mercedes Young Driver programme.. Before that he was the 2017 GP3 Series Champion and the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Champion for ART. He was substituted for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix where his performance was commendable and would have resulted in a possible podium if not for a pitstop error.

He won his maiden podium with Williams in the rain-soaked Belgian GP. Russell qualified in second place behind Max Verstappen. As the race finished behind safety cars, he was allowed to keep his position giving him a P2. He placed 15th in the drivers’ championship, scoring 16 of his team’s 23 points and outqualifying on all but one weekend.
