Toto Wolff explains the ‘confusion’ regarding the failure that led to Lewis Hamilton’s misery in Jeddah

Mercedes has openly acknowledged that this year their car is facing a lot of troubles and is not yet ready to be a championship-winning car and it is shown in their performance as well, with Lewis Hamilton only getting lucky in the first of the season at Bahrain by coming in third and sharing the podium with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.

While the seven-time World Champion seemed confident in the machinery and hoped for an improvement during the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, he fell out of luck by getting knocked out in Q1 during the qualifying. But Lewis Hamilton is known as a legend for a reason and he proved it yet again by making amendments in the Sunday race.

On the race day, Lewis Hamilton was starting at the back of the grid in P16 but after carefully strategizing a plan early on at the Jeddah Circuit, and using the safety car period to his advantage by staying on hard tires paved the way as he made his way into the top 10, securing a point for the team.

Given the struggles in the W13 over the weekend, it appeared that a late switch to mediums would consolidate much-needed points but as always, the timing of pit stop wall opening and safety car did not work in favor of the seven-time world champion with McLaren and Alpine being the issue this time who were witnessed blocking the pit entry as both the cars were trying to reach the pits to fix their problems with the car.

Kevin Magnussen moved ahead of Hamilton on track after Haas chose to pit him before the pits closed, even after finishing 10th, Toto Wolff was surprisingly calm and instead found positivity amongst the hurt, “I think on an encouraging side is that his stint on the hard was positive. I wouldn’t say that it was fast but it was positive,” said Wolff.

So that was just an overall confusing situation and he drove past and with slowing down because of the confusion, that made us come out behind Magnussen, and obviously, then it is game over,” explained Toto.
