George Pickens’ Reaction to Jerry Jones’ “Cowboy for the Rest of His Career” Remark
Despite placing a one year franchise tag on WR George Pickens, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is confident that Pickens will stay in Dallas beyond the 2026 season.

George Pickens joined CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott, and his other Dallas Cowboys teammates at Oxnard, California, where the reporters gave him a message from the boss, Jerry Jones. The veteran owner has made it clear that Pickens would remain a part of the Cowboys even after the 2026 season.
Pickens joined the Cowboys last year and established a bond with Lamb. Even though the Cowboys missed the playoffs, Pickens produced enough highlight reels for the Cowboys to keep him in Dallas, but for just one year.
Earlier in the offseason, the Cowboys placed a franchise tag on Pickens after declining to award him with a longer extension. Pickens eventually agreed to sign the papers right around the time of the minicamp.
Speaking with reporters in Calif, Jones announced that “George (Pickens) could be a Cowboy for the rest of his career, and that’d be a long time.” Pickens reacted, “Super excited. I’m always super happy when someone thinks highly of me, so shot out to Jerry.”
The Cowboys acquired Pickens and a seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers before the start of the 2025 season. Pickens played in every game, racked up 1429 yards, and 9 touchdowns from 93 catches (third most in the league behind Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Rams Puka Nacua).

The Steelers drafted Pickens 52nd overall in 2022. He had 174 catches for 2,841 yards and has scored 13 touchdowns in 48 games with the Steelers.
George Pickens provided a sneak peek into the negotiation process
Pickens signed the franchise tag. He is slated to earn $28.3 million for the 2026 season.

Although a repeat of the Micah Parsons conundrum didn’t manifest, for a brief moment doubts sprang up about Pickens’ future in Dallas. Pickens revealed that he left it to his agent, who he shares with Parsons, to handle the negotiations.
I left it up to [agents], so I was, even when we were nine, ten months from training camp, I was already thinking about ball, I was already training. I kind of leave that to the people that can do that. For me, I just make catches, make plays, be a playmaker.

George Pickens gave his honest take on facing the new-look Cowboys defense
The Cowboys had a very lopsided roster last year. While the offense was spearheaded by Prescott, Lamb, Pickens, and running back Javonte Williams, the defense failed to match their performances. At the end of the season, Jones fired Matt Eberflus and hired Christian Parker from the Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff.
Parker has been a great addition to the team. According to veteran safety Malik Hooker, Parker is a “breath of fresh air” and always available when required.

During minicamp, Lamb told DLLS Media that the Cowboys defense under Parker’s tutelage has been “annoying” to play against. Pickens echoed Lamb’s words after the first two days of training camp.

They’re surprising me the most because it’s group of new guys, or a group of guys that we brought back, and now they’re meshed together. We’ve even got [Caleb] Downs, who just got here, and he’s meshed with seven-year vets. That’s one of the things I think is super important.

The Cowboys drafted former Alabama and Ohio State safety Caleb Downs and UCF edge Malachi Lawrence in the first round. They further bolstered the defense by selecting Michigan linebacker Jaishawn Barham in the third round and Florida corner Devin Moore in the fourth.
After Parsons’ departure last year, Jones traded for DT Quinnen Williams. This year he re-signed Hooker and brought in experienced safeties P.J. Locke and Jalen Thompson.
The Cowboys play three preseason games, starting with the defending champions, the Seattle Seahawks, followed by the Cardinals and the Saints. Dallas kicks off the regular season by traveling to the Big Apple to face rivals the New York Giants.
