World No.3 Jon Rahm boldly states that if there is anyone from LIV Golf qualified to be on Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team, it would be Sergio Garcia. Although the Spaniard defected from PGA Tour to join LIV last year; Rahm believes he has enough qualifications to be a part of the event this 2023.
Currently, no LIV Golf players are chosen as part of the European team. Rahm who secured a spot in the Ryder Cup team, hopes his fellow compatriot can follow along. In a recent podcast, he talked about how Garcia has the qualifications to be there and his relationship with golf star Phil Mickelson despite league battle.
As per the rules, one has to be European to be on Luke Donald’s team and he has to have a DP World Tour card. Garcia discarded his DP World Tour chances the moment he took up $40 million from the Saudi-backed league to shift his course. Furthermore, the relationship between Garcia and DP World Tour worsened as the defector failed to pay back the $125,000 fine, labeling it as a serious breach of exemptions.
Jon Rahm endorses Sergio Garcia for Ryder Cup team despite defecting from PGA Tour for $40 million
The European 12-man team is supposed to face the U.S. team in September in Rome. Despite Jon Rahm’s call to add his friend Sergio Garcia to the schedule, it would seem impossible unless Luke Donald’s team and organizer decide to bend a few rules.
With utmost respect, Rahm stated that if there’s anyone he would want from LIV it would be Garcia, “The only one from LIV Golf that I would choose” despite breaking away from Tour. Rahm further stated that “even if he was missing a leg” Garcia should be someone who is irreplaceable for the event.
Earlier, Garcia dominated the faceoff with extraordinary plays and even recorded the competition’s highest scores. Just like Garcia, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood will also be absent from the 2023 Ryder Cup field. Garcia and Rahm make a solid team as the duo had accomplished greatness in the past.
The duo took part in the Whistling Strait event two years ago and also won three games. Even though participation in Luke Donald’s team seems unstable, the same cannot be said of the U.S. team captain Zach Johnson. Following the PGA Tour Championship victory, Brooks Koepka secured himself a spot in the race after an impressive 2023 majors performance. Official members participating in the Ryder Cup competition will be revealed shortly.
