Greg Norman and LIV Golf have faced backlash amidst financial challenges
LIV Golf has taken it upon itself to stir up the world of golf, but it has faced significant setbacks. This is because of the huge clout that PGA Tour enjoys. Despite its best efforts, the league has had trouble luring in many of the golf’s top sportspersons, with less than half of the top 12 joining the circuit. Thus, the league’s debut season has failed to cough-up much enthusiasm in the heart of golf fans.
“Start-up” costs have forced LIV to deal with financial challenges and retaliation from the golfing community. LIV certainly has not enjoyed much positive feedback for its tournaments. Limited sponsorship opportunities, due to LIV Golf’s affiliation with Saudi Arabia, may affect the purses of LIV Golf Circuit to lose out a mammoth $355 million by 2028.
While Phil Mickelson has alleged his loyalty to the rebel LIV circuit, Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy have voiced their staunch hostility. It’s rumored that LIV had offered Tiger Woods an enormous sum of $800 million to join the circuit. Unfortunately, they couldn’t poach away golf’s biggest superstar.
Currently, the circuit does not enjoy having a television deal, but CEO Greg Norman is positive about landing one as he has made it one of his top priorities. However, the circuit has struck out with major TV broadcasters like ESPN, NBC, and CBS, as well as streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime and Apple. The circuit is now hopeful of landing Fox Sports to broadcast its events.
