“They wanted more consequences”: PGA Tour responds to LIV Golf threat with startling prize money increase for 2023 season

The LIV Golf series has not failed to create its fair share of controversy since its inception. Recently however, the PGA Tour has announced a record AUD 590 million in prize money for the 2022-23 season on Monday. The PGA will award $206m in extra money, including $107m for the FedEx Cup playoffs, which will be cut from 125 to 70 participants.
The LIV Golf Series, led by ˘, has given the greatest rewards in history to draw PGA players to its upstart tour, which will expand from eight events in 2022 to 14 in 2023. Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson, Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, and Patrick Reed have joined LIV Golf despite criticism over Saudi human rights issues.
“The US PGA will return to a calendar-year season in 2024”, commissioner Jay Monahan announced. “They wanted more penalties for both the regular season and the playoffs,” Monahan added. “We’re confident we’ve met all our goals.” The 2022-23 PGA season will contain 47 tournaments, including three playoff events in August: the St. Jude Championship in Memphis, the BMW Championship in Chicago, and the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.
LIV Golf forces PGA Tour to play the prize money hand first
Late 2023 will contain events for players outside the top 70 to gain 2024 PGA status and “international events” featuring the top 50 in a limited field, no-cut format. No other details were given. The St. Jude and BMW prize money will rise to $28 million. Next year’s January Tournament of Champions purse will be $21 million. In 2024, it will open the PGA season.
Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational in February, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Invitational in March, Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial in June, and the WGC Match Play in March will all see prize money grow from $17 million to $28 million. The Players Championship in March will award $35 million. Scottish Open, Barbasol Championship, and Barracuda Championship will remain co-sanctioned.
The 2022-23 season begins with the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California, followed by the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow. The CJ Cup will be played in South Carolina in October, followed by the Bermuda Championship. Tony Finau’s Rocket Mortgage Classic will begin June 29 next year, while the 3M Open goes to July.
