While everyone might have thought Sir Nick Faldo’s time both at the booth and playing golf has come to an end, it seems like he might come out of retirement to cover the upcoming 2023 Masters. Sir Faldo had previously stated last year that he was done with his stint as a commentator for Sky Sports. However, it seems like he has been coaxed out of retirement to return back to the booth.

Sir Nick Faldo won The Masters in 1989,1990, and 1996 and has played rivaling the current LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman. In his last victory at the Augusta National in 1996, Norman had capitulated despite holding a six-shot lead while heading to the final round.

Sky Sports has indeed landed a huge deal with Sir Faldo at this moment, given BBC is still looking to sign a contract to screen the year’s first Major’s highlights. When Faldo retired last year as an analyst for the American network CBS, he was bid a tearful goodbye at Wyndham Championship by fans, players, and veterans of the game.

Since then, Faldo has been shrugging off rumors about a return to golf, mostly laughing off the rumors relating him with LIV Golf. This year’s Masters will mark Faldo’s 18th appearance in the Masters, a course much revered for him being the first Englishman to don a green jacket in 1989.

Golf fans might not forget the tearful and emotional scenes at the Wyndham Championship in August 2022. Sir Nick Faldo broadcasted the tournament as a CBS Analyst for the penultimate time in his career. He had just announced his retirement, after being involved as a lead analyst with the network for over 16 years.

However, the golfing fraternity would be much rejoiced to see Sir Faldo returning back to the booth, as he has been coaxed out of retirement by Sky Sports. Sir Faldo will be an exclusive commentator and analyst for the British network, covering their 2023 Masters broadcast. Notably, Sir Faldo had mentioned last year that he was retiring from full-time broadcasting. When this statement is taken in retrospect, it would have left him enough room to return as a special commentator for an auspicious golf event like The Masters.

Faldo was also due on attending the Champion’s Dinner at the Augusta National clubhouse this Tuesday. This dinner included six LIV Golfers who are considered rebels by a considerable section of the PGA Tour loyalists. The ones invited to the dinner from the LIV faction included Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Sergio Garcia. The Spaniard was described by Sir Faldo as “the most immature player I’ve ever witnessed.”

This year’s Masters will indeed be a unique or rather, an awkward one, filled with intense tensions and rivalry amongst the golfers. The recent defections to LIV in 2022 have caused a schism in the world of golf, resulting in sanctions on players joining the rebel LIV circuit. 18 players from the LIV faction will be participating in the Masters 2023, with the likes reigning Open champion, Cam Smith to join at Augusta.
