LeBron James signing for the Philadelphia 76ers stole the headlines for much of the offseason. However, another move that shocked the NBA world was the blockbuster trade of Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics to the 76ers.
While the Celtics were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last season, Brown was coming off his best campaign in terms of individual numbers. His performances saw him finish sixth in the MVP race.
The 76ers held an introductory press conference for Brown inside the Francis J. Myers Recreation Center on Thursday afternoon. When asked who reached out to him first after the trade, Brown spoke about his first reaction to the move before answering the question.
When I first got traded I just threw my phone across the room. Who [reached out] first? It might have been [Tyrese] Maxey. He reached out and was like, ‘I know there’s a lot of stuff going on right now, but we [are] excited to have you.’

Jaylen Brown was drafted by the Celtics as the number three pick in 2016. During his 10-year spell in Boston, he led them to a championship in 2024 and was even named the Eastern Conference Finals and Finals MVP.
The move was coming as the Celtics included the forward in a trade package for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The two-time MVP ended up getting traded to the Miami Heat, and the Celtics got even more desperate to part ways with their former champion.
Jaylen Brown thanks the city of Boston
Brown felt at home in Boston and was committed to staying there for another 10 years if it was up to him. Hence, the move even caught him by surprise, as he never requested a trade.
During his press conference, the five-time All-Star said his goodbyes and thanked the fanbase of his previous team.
I look back at the city of Boston, and I’m grateful. I’ve been able to develop as a man, as a human being there. A lot of my most important years, my most developmental years as a young man, I spent in Boston. I got there at 19, so the relationships are still there. I’m very grateful for my experience. My tenure in Boston, 10 years is a perfect cycle, perfect number for completion. So we won a championship, and I have nothing but respect for the city of Boston. But now it’s time to move forward a little bit.

It was not the ending Brown was looking for after spending a decade in Boston. He shared a good relationship with the Celtics fanbase and was always appreciated by them.
It was difficult for Jaylen Brown to leave the Celtics for Philly
There is little to no debate that the 76ers are the biggest winners of the trade. Not only was the Celtics’ decision to trade Brown a surprising one, but the decision to trade him to their rivals also makes it even more mind-boggling. The 76ers did not even lose much, as they had to give up Paul George and a few picks.

In his press conference, Brown revealed that the move to Philly has not completely settled for him yet.
It’s been a process to be honest I’m still processing to some degree. One, the excitement of coming to a new city a new place, new expectations, new energy. And also leaving somewhere you’ve been for a very long time, I’ve been in Boston for 10 years I’m 29 years old so I was there a third of my life. I meet some people some life long friends people I’ll still be connected to but in anything you start something new it’s an end of something else.

It was also reported that Brown played an important role in trying to get LeBron James to Philly as well. There is a lot of excitement surrounding the 76ers heading into next season. They have had the best summer so far, and now it is up to Brown and his teammates to make it all work on the court.
