The New York Jets finally found a trade partner for Zach Wilson. On Monday night, the 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov announced that the Jets were trading Wilson to the Denver Broncos, which was later confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter

Either side has yet to release the details of the deal; however, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport hinted that the Jets are rumored to get a 2024 sixth-round or seventh-round pick for Wilson. As for his earnings, both teams have agreed to split the 24-year-old’s $5.5 million salary for the upcoming season.

Following a tumultuous season at East Rutherford, New Jersey, the Jets were fed up with the 2021 first-round pick out of BYU. Wilson stepped up to resume as the starting quarterback after veteran Super Bowl winner Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury on the first day of last season.

After being benched twice during the 2023 campaign, Wilson came back, but it was clear that the Jets hierarchy had seen enough. Earlier this year, owner Woody Johnson expressed his disappointment as they continued to look for a trade partner.

When Wilson was reinstated as the quarterback, he perhaps had the best outing of his NFL career. He decimated the Houston Texans 30-6, registering 27 of 36 for 301 yards, which was only the third time he had crossed 300 passing yards. His performance even earned him the AFC Offensive Player of the Week trophy. However, the very next game, he suffered a concussion while playing against the Miami Dolphins.

Head coach Robert Saleh stuck by his young quarterback, trying his best to keep him away from all the negativity. Saleh claimed that Wilson will have a long career in the NFL. Yet, it would seem it would be away from the MetLife Stadium.

What’s next for the Jets

Aaron Rodgers is back and appears to be mobile during the Jets’ voluntary training sessions. When the team has a four-time NFL MVP, he is bound to start games. That’s probably one of the reasons general manager Joe Douglas chose to cut Zach Wilson.

On the other hand, Douglas could have stuck to his initial plan of allowing Wilson to learn and grow behind the 40-year-old star quarterback. Instead, this recent move clearly indicates they are happy with Tyrod Taylor as the only backup on the team.

Furthermore, there’s also the possibility of the Jets drafting a quarterback. The Jets hold the No. 10 pick in the draft, and according to the CBS Sports mock draft project, they will take an offensive tackle or tight end. Douglas can easily play his cards and sign a QB, perhaps Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. or Oregon’s Bo Nix.
