John Cena‘s historic announcement at Backlash 2026 was the introduction of an annual event known as the John Cena Classic. It’ll feature main roster WWE Superstars and the best from NXT in an evening where the fan votes will decide the champion of this newly minted concept. Cena has now reflected on the pros and cons of his brainchild.

In a lengthy post on social media, the 17-time world champion said that the John Cena Classic may not be perfect, but it’s authentic like him. He was also aware of the risk that it might totally fail. However, that wouldn’t keep him from giving it a try. Why he’s still doing this is because he wants to keep contributing to WWE for as long as he can.

With his in-ring career in the rearview mirror, The Cenation Leader’s second inning in WWE is all about using his energy and relevance to create a launchpad of opportunity for every budding wrestler to showcase what they got. While doing so, it’d provide for a unique experience for the fans, which Cena referred to as WWE’s dedicated fanbase.

Speaking of how the John Cena Classic could possibly fare, he believes that at least it’ll teach something, and at best, it’ll create something. ‘The Franchise Player’ noted that he’s ready for wherever the road takes the WWE Universe. He finally thanked the company for this opportunity and revealed that pertinent details about this event would emerge as they all figure it out.

Adding to it, Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio that Cena’s invitational is still a work in progress. WWE wanted to announce it publicly, but the company is still undecided on the show’s format and the actual procedure of crowning its champion.

During his address at Backlash, Cena underscored how the new blood stepped up in a major way the last time they got an opportunity, which was on the night the WWE legend had his final match last December.

‘The Prototype’ named the likes of Sol Ruca, Je’Von Evans, and Oba Femi, the mention of whom received huge Oba chants from the Tampa crowd. Cena even did the Oba Femi strut and gleefully mentioned how he has taken the WWE Universe by storm in merely four months. ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ didn’t miss out on stating the way Femi destroyed Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.

John Cena will be there for the John Cena Classic event

As mentioned above, The John Cena Classic currently has no timeframe on the WWE calendar. Regardless of wherever it’s placed, Cena will be there that night in person, as confirmed by him at Backlash. It’s not that hard to fathom that he’d at least be present for the inaugural iteration of his brainchild event.

There’s also some speculation around the design of the championship belt to be introduced, with many fans hoping it turns out akin to the spinner WWE title belt that Cena popularized back in the day. Also, since there’s an element of fan voting involved in it, the running joke on the internet is that it’d be the only realistic way of bringing LA Knight closer to championship gold in WWE.

Since John Cena said that even those who lose their matches could be crowned the champion should they impress the audience, it could actually help names like Knight, who have stayed consistently popular among the fans. Many other inconsistently booked stars could benefit from this concept given that it remains transparent and free from severe WWE regulation.
