John Cena stepped in to help Eric André after the comedian’s attention-grabbing red carpet stunt left him standing in his underwear during the world premiere of Little Brother in New York City on June 18.

Netflix hosted the premiere at the Paris Theater following a red carpet event at The Plaza. André arrived at the screening in the green Porsche featured in the upcoming comedy and immediately became the center of attention as he exited the vehicle.

As photographers lined the carpet, André’s outfit became caught and torn apart, leaving him partially undressed. The comedian briefly accepted a T-shirt from someone nearby but removed it moments later, continuing the bit in front of the crowd.

With cameras focused on the unfolding scene, Cena moved alongside his co-star and held up his blazer in an apparent attempt to shield André from photographers. The gesture added another memorable moment to the stunt, but André showed no signs of leaving the carpet. Instead, he remained alongside Cena and posed for photographs as attendees watched and cameras continued flashing.

Videos and photos from the premiere quickly circulated online, drawing attention to the pair’s appearance ahead of the film’s release. The moment became one of the most widely shared highlights from the event.

The premiere brought together much of the film’s cast and creative team. Among those in attendance were Christopher Meloni, Ego Nwodim, Sherry Cola, Caleb Hearon, Ben Ahlers, Bryce Gheisar and Pilot Bunch. Writer-director Matt Spicer also attended, along with producers David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer and co-producer Kate Griffith.

Several notable guests were present for the screening, including Dylan O’Brien, Sarah Sherman, Michelle Buteau, Sarah Ramos, and Eleonora Srugo. Little Brother is scheduled to begin streaming on Netflix on June 26.

John Cena discusses taking on a more serious character

While promoting the film at the premiere, Cena spoke about accepting a role that differs from many of the characters he has played in recent years.

In the comedy, John Cena portrays Rudd, a successful man whose life is disrupted when someone from his past unexpectedly reenters it. André stars opposite Cena and serves as the film’s central comedic force.

Asked what interested him most about joining the project, Cena pointed to André’s confidence in casting him against type.

The fact that Eric would wanna take a bet on me in a different capacity…This is a comedy, it’s a physical comedy, but Eric’s doing a lot of the heavy comedic lifting and I get to kind of be the more serious role that is more vulnerable, is more dramatic...People don’t make those bets on me and I’m very happy that he was like, ‘I think you’d be good for this part.

Cena and André previously worked together when the WWE star appeared on The Eric André Show in 2020. According to Cena, their professional relationship later led to André sharing the screenplay for Little Brother and asking for his thoughts on the project.

After reading the script, Cena saw the film as an opportunity to showcase a different side of both performers. His involvement eventually helped bring together the team that developed the project for release, setting the stage for the comedy’s debut later this month.
