Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks sit at the top of the NBA world at the moment. The Knicks fanbase went into a frenzy when their team lifted its third and most meaningful championship.

It was their first title since 1973. The long title drought gave them the right to brag about the win. While they did win the championship, it was the manner in which they did it. The Knicks went on a 13-match winning streak during the playoffs this year.

After falling 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round, the Knicks became an entirely different team for the rest of the postseason. They won their next three games, then swept the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers in the next two rounds before beating the San Antonio Spurs in just five games.

With the Knicks entering the 2026-27 campaign as the defending champions, the ticket prices for Opening Night at Madison Square Garden are exorbitantly high. Hence, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani seems not to be a fan of what his favorite team is doing with their ticket prices when asked if he would be attending the game on October 20.

Hopefully at cheaper ticket prices. Brother, I do not have $2,000 ready for that ticket.

Zohran Mamdani on NBC New York

Zohran Mamdani has claimed to be a big fan of the Knicks. The Mayor has become a prominent figure in New York. As a leader who has made affordability a big part of his ideology, it is not surprising to see him question the surging ticket prices.

The recent championship run by the New York Knicks was one for the ages. The championship parade united the city like never seen before.

Unfortunately, a good chunk of the Knicks fan base won’t be able to afford to watch Opening Night at MSG. It has been reported that the tickets are starting at over $1,000 and have continued to go up, even reaching around $2,000.

New York Knicks will take on the Philadelphia 76ers on Opening Night

October 20 will be a historic night for the Knicks. They will be raising their banner, and the players will also receive their championship rings on Opening Night. Hence, the ticket prices continue to shoot up with rising demand.

Just when the excitement for Opening Night could not be any higher, the NBA decided to schedule a matchup between the Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers. It promises to be a blockbuster clash as the 76ers have revamped their roster and will be looking for some revenge after their recent playoff loss.

The 76ers are coming off a memorable summer, making two huge acquisitions. First, they traded for Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics and then made the biggest acquisition in free agency by signing LeBron James on a two-year deal.

Hence, the ticket prices for Opening Night at MSG skyrocketed after the schedule was out. The 76ers will have the opportunity to make a mark and ruin the Knicks’ big night on October 20. The match can also preview what is to come in the playoffs.

Dirk Nowitzki admits that he never thought Jalen Brunson would become a superstar

Jalen Brunson may be a bigger name than Zohran Mamdani himself in New York. He has become a huge fan-favorite in the city after leading the New York Knicks to a championship and winning the Finals MVP.

However, Brunson has had his share of critics before lifting the title. Many believed that he did not have what it takes to lead a team to a championship. But he responded to his critics in fine fashion this year.

It appears that even former champion Dirk Nowitzki did not expect the 28-year-old to turn into a superstar player.

I was skeptical when he went to New York as the franchise player there. He’s a quiet guy, shy guy. To go to that media market, I was a little worried. Man, it’s been unbelievable on and off the floor. Really carried his franchise, so well-deserved to bring back the championship there after 50-something years.

Nowitzki and Brunson played together on the Dallas Mavericks for one season. It was the German’s final season in the NBA, while it was Brunson’s rookie season after being drafted by the Mavs as a second-round pick. The Knicks guard has come a long way since and heads into the new season as the defending champion.
