The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed some of the most dominating batting performances since its inception in 2008. Best batters from across the world take part in the cash-rich league and in some cases, as lone warriors, they would singlehandedly aid in the team’s reaching heights.
When talking about batting records, one name that comes to everyone’s mind is former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli. 2016 was the season, and the 34-year-old was enjoying the form of his life, racking up a whopping 973 runs from 16 matches, taking the team to the summit clash.
Then there is England’s white-ball skipper Jos Buttler whose scintillating show in the 2022 season took the Rajasthan Royals (RR) final. And now, a youngster is eyeing to break these records. Gujarat Titans‘ (GT) Shubman Gill has already crossed the 800-run mark in one season, since making his debut in 2018.
Kane Williamson represents the Gujara Titans but when he played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, in 2018, he enjoyed a dream season. In 17 matches, he scored 735 runs at an average of 52.50, and a strike rate of 142.44, including eight fifties, and the highest score of 84. He played a huge role in SRH’s reaching the IPL final, though their dream of clinching their second trophy was shattered by four-time champions Chennai Super Kings.
David Warner (848 runs)
In 2016, eager IPL fans were keeping a close eye on who can end up clinching the Orange Cap between David Warner and Virat Kohli. Though Kohli was the Orange Cap holder, under Warner, Sunrisers Hyderabad were crowned as champions for the first time in 2016. He is also the most Orange Cap-winning player across all seasons as he wore it three times (2015, 2017, and 2019).
Warner scored 848 runs in 17 matches with the highest being an unbeaten 93-run knock at an average of 60.57, and a strike rate of 161.42.
Shubman Gill (851 runs)
Fans and experts say the young Shubman Gill is destined for greatness. The 23-year-old became the most impressive Indian batter, not just in the IPL, but in international cricket also, with centuries one after the other. The Punjab-born batter, in IPL 2023 aggregated a staggering 851 runs from 16 matches, at an average of 60.78 and a strike rate of 156.43, with three tons and four half-centuries. Gill has also played a huge role in GT’s title-winning season in its maiden appearance in 2022.
Jos Buttler (863 runs)
In 2022, even prior to lifting the T20 World Cup as a captain, England’s Jos Buttler displayed why he is called Jos the Boss. Kohli’s record was in danger as like the RCB great, Buttler also hammered four IPL tons in a single season. However, during most part of the second half, his bat remained quiet.
Had he played like the first half, he would have surpassed Kohli’s 973 runs. Nevertheless, behind Rajasthan Royals’ reaching their second IPL final since their maiden trophy-winning season in 2008, the 32-year-old played a massive role, though, the Pink Jersey couldn’t defend a small target against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final. In 17 matches, Buttler collected 863 runs at an average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05, with four centuries and the same number of fifties.
Virat Kohli (973 runs)
The talismanic RCB batter enjoyed a spectacular season in 2016, where he, paired with South African legend AB de Villiers and the Universe Boss Chris Gayle took RCB to glory. Kohli featured in 16 matches, amassing a whopping 973 runs with four tons and seven half-centuries, helping his team reach the summit clash; however, their dream of lifting the coveted cup was destroyed by David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad.

After reading about the big names in tennis and becoming an ardent follower, she dreams of visiting Wimbledon one day.
