Chase Elliott and Joey Logano’s crew chiefs will be fighting for a unique NASCAR record in 2023

The cup series champion Joey Logano and the regular season champion Chase Elliott have been the standout drivers of the 2022 cup season.  The duo ranks first and second in the number of wins earned this year. Elliott won 5 times in 2022, while Logano visited the victory lane four times, including the season finale in Phoenix.

The drivers can help their crew chiefs to earn an incredible NASCAR record next season if they can emulate similar success. They can become the active crew chief with the most significant number of wins in the cup series. The current record is held by Kevin Harvick’s crew chief Rodney Childers, who has 40 career wins.

The No:9 Hendrick Motorsports Crew chief Alan Gustafson has visited the victory lane 38 times in his career. His most productive stint has been with Elliott. They have won 18 races and the 2020 cup championship together. Before managing Elliott, he worked with Hall of Famers Mark Martin and Jeff Gordan. Gustafson has also worked with two times cup champion Kyle Busch.

The No:22 Team Penske Racing crew chief Paul Wolfe has won two cup championships and 37 races. He worked with Brad Keselowski before joining Joey Logano in 2020. He has won 8 races so far with Logano. He also has won a race in all 12 seasons. He has been a crew chief in the cup series.  Both Chase Elliott and Joey Logano can deliver the record to their crew chiefs, but it is challenging as it sounds.

The 2023 season is expected to be the last of Harvick in the top tier of NASCAR, so that the SHR garage will go all over for the championship. Wolfe and Gustafson will have to put in double the effort to achieve the record. If we take the all-time winners list, both Wolfe and Gustafson have a long way to go, as Dale Inman holds the record with 191 wins, and Leonard Wood at second with 83 wins. The dup currently ranks 14 and 15 on the all-time list.

The success of any drivers in the 2022 season depended on how fast they could adjust and evolve themselves with the Next-Gen cars. A common trend in the earlier half of the cup season was the veterans struggling to adapt to the new vehicle while the youngsters were comparatively thriving.

Joey Logano was the only veteran driver up there at the top since the start. He averaged a finish of 13.5 every race and was a top 5 challenger in most of the races he ran this year. He was also more composed and less aggressive this year. His efforts alongside the car his crew was able to provide him every race week helped him to secure 17 top 10 finishes, 11 of whom were in the top 5.

Chase Elliott was the most consistent driver of the 2022 season and had the best average finish of any driver this year with 12.5. He scored 20 top 10’s and 12 top 5’s this year. He struggled to secure a win in the first half of the season but made an impressive comeback and topped the season win list. He also is at the top in the number of top 20 finishes scored and the number of laps led.
