It is getting hard for Kyle Busch to win at Richmond Raceway

Richmond is one of the favorite tracks of Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch. The two times Xfinity series champion converted his turbulent start at the track in the Truck series to dominant displays on Cup and Xfinity events. But the veteran is finding it hard to score wins at the old track and has expressed his views on why that is so ahead of the track that has seen 9 RCR Chevys on the victory lane.
Busch has a solid start to his 2023 RCR debut campaign after the wild 2022 ride with Joe Gibbs Racing. He has scored his maiden Cup win for the team at Fontana and has finished inside the top 10 in all but one race so far this season. His Richmond resume is special as well. Busch has scored 6 wins at the track, all with JGR, and has 7 P2 finishes. The last time he finished outside the Top 10 at the track was in 2017. He is the active most win holder and top 5 fishes at the track and has the second-best average finish. But he now claims that the track is getting harder for him every year.
“I have had a lot of success at Richmond-Raceway, and I enjoy going there. It’s a fun place. I struggled and was terrible there when I started in the Truck Series back in 2001. But then the track got repaved. I was able to go back there in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and sat on the pole, and got my first Xfinity Series to win at Richmond. Now that the track has aged and the surface is getting older, it has really turned that track into a tough short track,” Kyle Busch said.
“It is much harder than it once was. You used to be able to get down to the bottom, rip the center of the corner and drive off the corner really hard. Now, it’s all about managing your tires and caring for your car. Long runs always happen there. The second and third stages go 100 laps plus, and that’s about how far you can go. It definitely makes it a tough one to drive,” Busch added.

Kyle Busch claims that changing the race to the afternoon won’t have any effect on the final product
This weekend the track will host an afternoon race, unlike the usual night race, and when asked about his thoughts on how it can affect the results, Busch said it wouldn’t cause much change. He believes that the bottom lane will obviously be faster and that it won’t be affected to by the change in time.
“I don’t know if it will make any difference for better racing. I just think that it makes for different racing. Being there in the night-time, I think it ventures more to the bottom around the bottom. The shortest way around is the fastest way around,” Busch said.
“When you’re able to have it a little bit slicker with a little bit more track temp during the day, a little bit more rubber goes down. It allows guys to move around somewhat, but when your car is good, and you’re good around the bottom, the shortest way is the fastest way around. I don’t see there is much difference,” Busch added.
