Byron’s actions were part of his reprisal for a move made on him earlier in the race by the JGR veteran. Byron admitted at his post-race interview, he intentionally spun the latter. He said, “I was just trying to give him a light tap there. Nothing malicious. You see it all the time,”.

Denny Hamlin and fellow NASCAR driver called out NASCAR for HMS bias following its inability to penalize Byron. Denny Hamlin even suggested that “If you’re going to allow it, then I’m just going to try to get all my teammates to take out all the competition under caution,”.

NASCAR was forced to take action against Byron after the heavy backlash as former cup champion Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and many more joined Hamlin in calling out NASCAR. The severe penalty was given for NASCAR to regain its credibility.
