The NASCAR community is heartbroken over the tragic death of two times Cup Series champion Kyle Busch. He passed away after getting hospitalized for severe illness, as he was found un-responsive in Concord Chevy Sim facility, preparing for the 2026 Coca Cola 600.

It was a painful experience for everyone at Richard Childress Racing, as they had long-terms plans for the driver in the Cup series and beyond. The team was in a similar situation in 2001, when Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt was killed in a tragic Daytona 500 accident.

Now the team has announced that just like they did more than two decades ago, they have decided to suspend the use of the No:8 car. The veteran’s replacement Austin Hill will use No:33 for Charlotte and potentially for the races afterwards.

Richard Childress Racing has elected to suspend use of the No. 8 and will run the No. 33 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and beyond.

The team via the statement made on social media asserted that Kyle Busch played a key role in making the stylized No.8 significant again in the sport. In honor of the veteran, RCR has decided to keep the car reserved for his son Brexton Busch, who is building a career in motorsports.

Kyle Busch was instrumental in the design of RCR’s stylized No. 8 and it has become synonymous with Kyle and an important symbol for his fans and the NASCAR industry. No one can carry it forward to the level that he did. The No. 8 is reserved and ready for Brexton Busch when he is ready to go NASCAR racing.

Kyle and I had a really challenging existence for many years. But we luckily took the time to figure out our differences, and that was something he instigated with a conversation in his bus around how we each managed our racing teams. I was super eager for us to get on better terms. But it was he who made the effort for that to be possible… Most recently, we had even been discussing him running my Late Model at Wilkesboro this summer.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrote on X.

Further talking about the point, he called the late legend one of the greatest drivers the sports has ever seen and admitted that his heart is aching for the Busch family that lost its pillar. Junior reiterated that he is thankful that he was able to burry the hatchet with the racing before the tragedy.

Kyle was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. No one can deny that. But he was also a father, a husband, brother, son, and a friend to many. My heart is broken for the Busch family. I will never be able to make sense of this loss, but I am thankful that we had found a way to become friends.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. added.

The comments from the HOF shows how much the racing legend was adored by the community and how much they respect his racing prowess. It would be interesting to see how the community is going to pay their respect to the legend in the coming days.
