The NASCAR Cup Series race last Sunday witnessed the three Trackhouse Racing drivers having one of the most miserable days they have on the track this season. Midway through the day, the trio of Connor Zilisch, Ross Chastain and Shane van Gisbergen fighting for the lucky dog position.
SVG made some more aggressive moves during that dramatic moment and his teammate Chastain was clearly frustrated with it. The Florida born driver showed his feelings by giving his teammate an epic thumbs down in the cool down lap. The Kiwi talked about on his latest appearance on Corey LaJoie’s Stacking Pennies podcast.

Yeah, when the guy’s deciding whether to let you live or not. That’s exactly what I thought it needed to be. I tried to put him in the barrels. And then Connor was hitting us as well.
Shane van Gisbergen told Corey LaJoie.
Further talking about the controversial moment, Shane van Gisbergen explained how they hit each other multiple times in the moment and how pissed they were at each other. But they settled the beef soon after parking the car with a group hug, consoling each other over the nightmare they went through together.
I mean, we raced the **** out of each other for the lucky dog at the end, and I put myself in bad spots because I got tight, and we hit each other and doored each other for nothing. But, I mean, we were just pissed at each other, pissed at everything after a long night. I went and saw him straight away, and we had, like, a little group hug, the three of us, consoling each other.

Shane van Gisbergen shares the hard truth about Trackhouse’s tough 2026 season
Later in the same conversation, the Supercars champion highlighted how the massive struggle they are having together is making them closer. He admitted that the team’s performance dip isn’t about one person, it’s about the whole crew not being able to find solution for their struggles.

I mean, all three of us had the same struggle with all different characteristics, and you’re going through it together, but also all the crew chiefs and engineers, everyone’s going through it. You know, it’s not a single person’s fault, and that’s – now is when you really have to be a team to dig yourself out.
Shane van Gisbergen said.
Furthermore, the veteran racer admitted that his team desperately needs some fresh thinking right now to get out of the nightmare run they are in. Right now, they have to grind their way out of the tough moments, hoping for the best.
You just need a leader and someone to have fresh thinking or someone to just be a guiding light, I guess, as weird as that sounds. But, yeah, you just need fresh ideas and then to not – you know, you want to think out of the box, but you don’t want to go crazy left field. You know, there’s still a way to make fast race cars. You just have to knuckle down when it’s like this.
Shane van Gisbergen added.
The comments from the veteran racer are on point and shows how it is hard for teams to get out of messy situations in the Next-Gen era. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver in the coming days.
