Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunderwas selected as the #2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft but picked up an injury at the start of the season, which ruled him out. The 7-foot power forward posted pictures on his Instagram of his rehab process and his attempt to put on muscle before the start of next season. NBA fans on Twitter ripped into the young athlete for his preseason body.
Chet Holmgren was a highly recruited player coming into the draft averaging 14 points and ten rebounds for Gonzaga in his only college season. The tall and lanky power forward is known for his ability to score the ball efficiently and his bottomless bag of tricks. Holmgren shot 60% from the field and 39% from three-point range for Gonzaga in the 2021/22 college season.
Holmgren’s only downside in his draft report was his average free throw percentage at just 77% and his lack of muscle which would hamper him in today’s NBA. However, he would not be the first skinny power forward to attempt a bulk-up, as 2x MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo was in the same boat. Giannis bulked up to his Greek god physique, and it looked like Chet wanted to go down the same path.
Chet Holmgren was roasted on Twitter for his fitness progress
Holmgren posted pictures of him working out in the offseason with weights, and a Twitter page captioned the post saying, ‘Chet has added muscle mass.’ However, the photos showed Holmgren still looking relatively lean when he entered the league, but the progress was visible. NBA fans did not spare him, though, as they ripped into his skinny body in the replies.
“Taller Austin reeves,” said one Twitter user, comparing his physique to the Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard. Reaves, however, did prove himself in the playoffs this season with some clutch performances, and if Chet Holmgren could replicate that, he would undoubtedly be exempt from criticism for his lean body. The Oklahoma City Thunder were in contention for the playoffs this year, and with Chet back, they would believe they have a solid shot at making it this time.
“Return, he hasn’t never played an play in the nba..”, said another reply as Holmgren picked up a season-ending injury before the season started. Chet had a partial ligament tear in his right foot which ruled him out of his rookie season. Chet Holmgren is set to return for the 2023/24 season and hopes to start his NBA journey off on the right foot this time.
